Writers and artists use the stories and symbols of Greek myths to this day. While we no longer view the myths as religion, many people still enjoy reading them. Today, most people who live in the Western Hemisphere believe in one god. People who believe in one god are monotheistic. Myths are traditional stories. The Greeks used myths to explain things they did not understand. At first, myths were passed down from generation to generation by word of mouth. Later, Greek poets created epic stories based on those legends. An epic is a long poem about great heroes and their deeds.

Extractions: Background The stories of the Greek myths are all that remain of an ancient religion. The gods and goddesses of stories represent the metaphors that the ancient Greeks used to make sense of the world around them and of life in general. Those metaphors provided inspiration for a wealth of literature. Since the ancient Greeks began telling these stories in a pre-literate era (before they had writing), at first the stories were passed down from generation to generation in an oral tradition. The story of the Odyssey, for example, is supposed to have been composed by a blind poet named Homer. Today scholars suspect there was more than one "Homer" who helped shape the final epic, as different storytellers added or subtracted details or episodes. Once poets and dramatists began writing the stories down, they preserved them for future generations. What they preserved, though, is the story as they told it. So we must look at the stories as both religion and literature at the same time. We must treat them with respect. You will understand the great Greek epic poem The Odyssey much better if you have a working knowledge of the gods and goddesses. We will spend this week researching and presenting what we have learned. At the end of the week, we will have a Greek (pitch-in) feast!

Introduction: So, does anyone know what it means to be a good person? I mean we hear about an awful lot of people who are not so good? You know! That bully who was hitting all those kids or the person that was always calling people names or that student that got caught cheating on her exams. What we don't hear about a lot are those examples of people who is a truly good, the heroes. So, I ask you, what does it mean to be a good person? I propose that we hold a Greek-style symposium to develop an answer to this difficult question. We will work together to share our different ideas and develop a reasonable answer to our question, "What does it mean to be a good person?" As the host of our symposium, I will be the first to share my own opinions. After that, you will be free to question my ideas through statements, arguments, or ideas of your own. Remember, all participants of a symposium must be respectful to one another and really listen to each others ideas. I believe that the answer to our difficult question "what does it mean to be a good person?" lies hidden in Ancient Greek myths. This idea that we can learn from a culture that is so old may sound like a strange idea but listen and I will explain my reasoning. The Ancient Greeks had a society where they were free to think for themselves, openly discuss their ideas, and express their opinions. And they did think deeply about many questions and dilemmas that they were facing. The greatest of the thinkers were called philosophers, which means "Lovers of Knowledge." You may be familiar with some of the Ancient Greek Philosophers; Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle.
