Extractions: One of the great paradoxes of history is that the next hesitant advance of European civilization - the development of the first city-states - took place not on the fertile open central European plains, but in a remote island to the south of the Aegean Sea which was completely lacking in metal resources. While the glittering mounted warrior-princes of central Europe dissipated their creative energy in warefare, a highly cultured yet peaceful society, built on trade and an agricultural surplus, emerged on Crete. The history of Greece can be traced back to Stone Age hunters. Later came early farmers and thecivilizations of the Minoan and Mycenaean kings. This was followed by a period of wars and invasions, known as the Dark Ages. In about 1100 BC, a people called the Dorians invaded from the north and spread down the west coast. In the period from 500-336 BC Greece was divided into small city states, each of which consisted of a city and its surrounding countryside.

According to Homer, this was a time of violence and wars based on trade rivalries, although it is thought that Minoan culture was generally peaceful and harmonious. By the 11th century BC the Minoan and Mycenaean cultures had collapsed due to changing patterns of trade and a Dorian invasion from the north, and a 'dark age' ensued. By 800 BC Greece was undergoing a cultural and military revival, with the evolution of city-states, the most powerful of which were Athens and Sparta. Greater Greece was created, with southern Italy as an important component. This period was followed by an era of great prosperity known as the classical (or golden) age. During this time, Pericles commissioned the Parthenon, Sophocles wrote Oedipus the King , Socrates taught young Athenians the rigours of logic, and a tradition of democracy (literally, 'control by the people') was ushered in. The classical age came to an end with the Peloponnesian Wars (431-404 AD) in which the militaristic Spartans defeated the Athenians. While embroiled in the Peloponnesian Wars, the Spartans failed to notice the expansion of Philip of Macedon's kingdom in the north, which enabled him to easily conquer the war-weary city-states. Philip's ambitions were surpassed by his son Alexander the Great, who marched into Asia Minor, Egypt (where he was proclaimed pharaoh and founded the city of Alexandria), Persia and parts of what are now Afghanistan and India. The reign of the Macedonian empire, which lasted in the form of three dynasties after Alexander's death at the age of 33, is known as the Hellenistic period, due to the merging of Greek ideas and culture with the other proud cultures of antiquity, creating a new cosmopolitan tradition.

During the second millennium BC, Greece gave birth to the great civilisations of the Minoan (2600-1500 BC), the Mycenaean (1500-1150 BC) and the Cycladic civilisation on the islands of the Centre Aegean. Then, the Greece history is a succession of various invasions and dominations: the Macedonians formed a strong Empire, followed by the Romans and the Byzantine Empire which ended with the invasion of the Turks. The Ottoman rule lasted for 400 years and was a dark period for the inhabitants of the ex-Byzantine Empire. Wanting to finally win their freedom, people started to organise themselves and various sporadic revolts exploded against the Turkish oppressor. The Independence War started from the Peloponnese in 1821 and ended on March 1831, with the establishment of the new and independent Greek State. A monarchy was established a few years after that by the Great Powers. Then Greeks elected Eleutherios Venizelos as their Prime Minister; but only a few years after, he was assassinated. A civilian war followed as well as the terrible German and Italian occupation and the dictatorship of Metaxas (1967), which ended in 1974. This very incomplete and summarized recapitulation of the Greek history gives a taste of its complexity and of the sufferings alienation of its population who often fought for its freedom.

Extractions: Long the home of the Seneca Indians, the area which would become the Town of Greece was first visited by the French explorer LaSalle in 1669. This area would be witness to numerous troop movements over the next century as the French and English fought for control of North America. The Indian trail on the Ridge became the roadway along which English troops under General John Prideaux marched against the French at Fort Niagara. Later this same trail would carry pioneers and settlers westward. The first permanent settlement was established in 1792 along the west side of the Genesee River at King's Landing, later to be named Hanford Landing. With the establishment of the Port of the Genesee by President Thomas Jefferson in 1805, trade from the Great Lakes began to pour in. With access to Lake Ontario, the Genesee River, Ridge Road and later the Erie Canal, the Town became a transportation hub and a major supplier of farm produce to the new and growing nation. Originally called Northampton, the Town of Greece was established by the New York State Legislature on March 22, 1822. Its name was chosen because of the current wave of sympathy toward the Greeks who were then fighting for independence from Turkish rule. The Town seat was named Charlotte for the daughter of Colonel Troup, the land agent for an English estate which owned much of western New York at the time. Charlotte itself was incorporated as a village in 1869, and was part of Greece until 1916 when it was annexed to the City of Rochester as the 23rd Ward.

A Dark Age followed, until around 800 BC a new Hellenic Greece emerged. It was this Greece of city-states that established colonies along the Mediterranean, resisted Persian invasions, and whose culture would be the basis of Hellenistic civilization that followed the empire of Alexander the Great. Around 1700 BC, a large disturbance, probably an earthquake, (or possibly an invasion from Turkey) devastated the society. But the population rose again, and the palaces were rebuilt even larger than before. Around 1650 BC, the eruption of the volcanic island Thera caused tsunami which destroyed installations near the coasts. The sulphur dioxide emitted by the volcano also caused a decline in temperature, which resulted in poor harvests for several years. Around 1400 AD the Turks (Ottoman Empire) savagely invaded and then occupied Greece for a period of about 400 years. Even after March 25, 1821 when mainland Greece was liberated, Crete was still under Ottoman rule. But the island's rough and mountainous - yet beautiful - terrain kept many places inaccessible to the Turks. Even when the Venetians invaded Greece, Crete was spared because they were at a great disadvantage against the islanders who knew the land. Thus, Crete was a major center from the liberation movement.

Extractions: Minoan Crete maintained an extensive network of trading links that brought influences drawn from Egypt and Mesopotamia to Crete. The Minoans exported pottery, grains, wines, and oils, and tended to import luxury materials such as precious metals, jewels, and ivory. Minoan culture gave rise to several great cities that featured stone buildings and provision for a water supply and drainage. The city adjacent to the great Palace of Knossos was home, at its peak, to almost one hundred thousand people. Knossos was thus one of the first major cities in human history!!! On the Greek mainland meanwhile Mycenaen authority was exercised through a number of localised kingdoms. These kingdoms may have adopted written record keeping based on Minoan examples.

The majority of members belong to the Christian Orthodox Church. Many of the Scouts of Greece, live in overseas Greek communities. Boys of all religions are welcome to become members.
