Extractions: The breakdown of Roman law and civilisation was fairly swift after the Roman army departed in 410 AD. To counter the raids from continental pirates, Vikings, Picts and Scots towns would bring in mercenaries from Europe to defend them from attack. These mercenary soldiers were Angles and Saxons from northern Germany. The deal was that the mercenaries brought their families with them, and got paid with land which they could farm. Eventually the Anglo Saxon mercenaries realised that they were stronger than their employers and appear to have taken over the running of areas themselves. The new Anglo Saxon invaders were not organised centrally, as the Romans had been, or as the Normans would be. They slowly colonised northwards and westwards, pushing the native Celts to the fringes of Britain. Roman Britain was replaced by Anglo Saxon Britain, with the Celtic peoples remaining in Cornwall, Wales and Scotland. The Anglo Saxon areas eventually combined into kingdoms, and by 850 AD the country had three competing kingdoms as shown on the map on the left The three kingdoms of Mercia, Northumbria and Wessex, not only were competing between themselves, but they were also under sustained attack from Viking raids. The Viking incursions culminated with a "Great Army" landing in East Anglia in 865 AD. It made wide territorial gains, and by 875 the kingdoms of Mercia and Northumbria had succumbed. Only Wessex remained as Anglo Saxon.

Extractions: Medical Heritage of Great Britain Over the centuries, disease and mankind's efforts to be rid of it have left a tangible mark on the landscape - what one might call the archaeology of medicine. These historical artefacts have been largely neglected and with the rapid changes in medical care which characterise contemporary society, old established institutions are being closed and their buildings abandoned. Derelict hospital buildings are now a familiar part of the British urban landscape. Some are rapidly reduced to rubble whilst others suffer a less ignominious fate by undergoing an architectural metamorphosis into supermarkets, hotels and residential developments. General practitioners increasingly work within purpose built premises. The forerunners of such buildings are the 19th century dispensaries, some of which survive and have been adapted to other purposes. There are now very few examples of old established doctors' surgeries which are still providing a service in their original setting. A few early surgeries have been rebuilt in museum or heritage settings. A few working pharmacies still have good collections of jars and other ancient paraphernalia whilst others have been dismantled and reassembled in museums and heritage theme parks.

Deliveries of production Spitfire I's began in June 1938, just over two years after 'Mutt' Summers flew the prototype at Southhampton on the 5th of March, 1936. In the two years preceding production, Supermarine laid out their Woolston factory for large-scale production and organized one of the largest subcontract schemes ever envisioned in Britain. Until that time, as it was becoming increasingly obvious that there was no limit to the likely demand for the Spitfire. It was also obvious that one factory alone was not going to be able to meet the demand even with subcontracting. Large scale plans were laid during 1937 for the construction by the Nuffield Group of a large new shadow factory at Castle Bromwich near Birmingham for Spitfire production. On April 12,1938 a contract was placed for 1,000 Spitfires to be built at this new factory, of which the actual construction had not then even begun. By the time of the Munich crisis on 12-13 September, 1938, only five Spifires had been completed. In the following year, on April 29 further contracts were placed with Supermarine for 200 Spitfires and on August 9 for 450. When Britain went to war on September 3,1939 a total of 2,160 Spitfires were already on order.

The synthesis of many years' intimate experience of fighter biplane design translated into the modern formula; a compromise between tradition and requirements born of a new era in air warfaresuch was the Hawker Hurricane. The first fighter monoplane to join the Royal Air Force and the first combat aircraft adopted by that arm capable of exceeding 300 m.p.h. in level flight, the Hurricane shouldered the lion's share of Britain's defense during the " Battle of Britain", and was largely responsible for the successful outcome of this conflict for the defending forces, equipping more than three-fifths of R.A.F. World Civilizations The Reader's Companion to American History A famous comment about Anglo-American relations, attributed to Winston Churchill, asserts that the United States and Great Britain are two nations divided by a common language. Certainly there has been an ambiguity in their relations right from the start. In the twentieth century, the term special relationship has often been used to describe the conjunction of interests between the two nations. But while there is little doubt that there are many shared assumptions on both sides of the Atlantic, it would be misleading to minimize the differences. Their original relationship was defined by the tension between the mother country's colonial policies, eventually evolving into the system called mercantilism, and the desire in the colonies for increasing "home rule." Colonists were also torn, however, between wishing to see themselves as English citizens, with all the rights and cultural advantages of such a status, and more specific ambitions for the prosperity of Massachusetts or Pennsylvania or Virginia. It was not until the middle of the eighteenth century that the latter feeling began to dominate, as various schemes of colonial unification were discussed in local taverns and political gatherings. Benjamin Franklin, for example, took a leading part in drafting the Albany Plan of 1754, a proposal for a central colonial authority that could deal with Native Americans and the French threat. Neither London nor the colonial assemblies were ready for such a bold departure, and the plan diedbut not the restless spirits behind the plan. At the end of the Great War for Empire (1754-1763), several new forces came into play that further stimulated the growth of an American "nationalism." Among these, of course, were the various levies and taxes that London sought to impose on the colonies.
