To the rear of the Friends Meetinghouse under a huge sycamore is a plaque and stone marking the grave of Chief Ockanickon , Chief of the Mantas tribe of the Lenape, and an early Native American friend of the settlers. A boulder near the tree bears his mark, and a bronze plaque with his last words: 406 High Street Incorporated into this building is the oldest extant construction in the City of Burlington ; first occupied by Thomas Ollive, an original founder of the City and a prominent member of early West Jersey government. In time it became the home of international trader Richard Smith, Jr., and his son Richard Smith, Esq., a member of the Continental Congress who resigned because of his Quaker vows of nonviolence when war with Great Britain was imminent. It was later the dwelling of Henry C. Carey, noted American Economist and muckraker.

Adams National Historical Park Featuring the Adams Mansion, this site is a memorial to four generations of the distinguished Adams family, who resided in it from 1788 until 1927. Adams National Historic Site. (National Park Service, Frear, 1974.) The Adams Mansion, named "Peacefield" by John Adams but known to some as the Vassall-Adams House and later to the Adams family as the "Old House," was dear and close to all of them. In 1730-31 Maj. Leonard Vassall, a wealthy West Indian sugar planter who had come to Massachusetts some 8 years before, built the oldest part of the building. Comprising the front western section of the present residence, it was a 2-1/2-story frame structure of Georgian design with clapboarded walls and gambrel roof. The first floor contained two rooms separated by a central stair hall; the second floor, two bedrooms and center hall; and the dormered attic, three smaller chambers. The kitchen and servants' quarters were detached. John Adams, while still Minister to Great Britain, bought the house in September 1787 from Vassall's grandson, Leonard Vassall Borland, and on his return the next year took possession. At that time, he apparently attached the 2-1/2-story kitchen and servants' quarters to the rear, or northwest, corner of the main structure. In 1800, near the end of his Presidency, he doubled the size of the residence by adding a large, 2-1/2-story, L-shaped wing of frame at the eastern end. It was constructed in the same Georgian style as the original house and contained on the first floor a second entry hall and staircase and the "Long Room" to the east of the hall. Adams' large study-library was on the second floor.

B y the middle of the eighteenth century, the struggle for power between the English and French in North America had reached a crescendo. The continuing contest for control of lands finally led to warwith the British and their Native American allies opposing the French and their Native American allies. Called the French and Indian War, the nine-year conflict began in the Ohio Valley in 1754 and spread throughout the world. Building a Fort in Frontier North Carolina The colonial assembly of North Carolina prepared for war, voting funds for troops and ordering the building of a fort on the western frontier. Thus in 1756 Fort Dobbs was constructed by a company of provincial rangers commanded by Hugh Waddell. The new fort was located in the Piedmont region near the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and was named in honor of the royal governor of the colony, Arthur Dobbs.

Crossroads and Conquest is funded by a National Endowment for the Humanities "Landmarks of American History" grant, which in 2004 has sponsored workshops for educators at seventeen historic sites around the country. Joining me in this invitation is a team of historians, archeologists, pedagogy specialists, and highly skilled classroom teachers from the National Park Service, Washington State University, Portland State University, University of British Columbia, Shoreline Community College, Oregon Historical Society, and Battle Ground School District. Together, we will explore historical themes of cultural encounter and conquest that are key to understanding the central role of the West in the evolution of American national identity. We will critique the Old and New West historiographies. We will use primary sources and methodologies including archeology, geography, material culture, and written documents to develop tools that will engage students and enrich their understanding of American history. We will collaborate to improve student learning through an appreciation of the importance of place and space. By 1846, a treaty with Great Britain established an international boundary at the 49th parallel and in 1849 the United States military arrived at Vancouver to establish U.S. dominance to the Pacific Ocean. The Vancouver Barracks was the first U.S. Army post in the Pacific Northwest and headquarters for the vast Department of the Columbia, the regional center for U.S. military operations in the last half of the 19th century and into the 20th century. During the 19th century Vancouver Barracks served as the regional center for conquest, the site from which the Indian Wars of the 1850s and 1870s were fought,. Many who would later become heroes served at the site between the 1850s and 1870s, including Ulysses S. Grant, Phil Sheridan, George McLellan, and Oliver Otis Howard.
