    Extractions: Information about the original Tryon Palace landscape is scarce. Royal governor William Tryon expressed little interest in horticulture and made only a few references to gardens in his letters. Two maps of New Bern drawn in 1769, while the Palace was under construction, reveal two different garden plans. Yet, information about the gardens can come from the most unexpected sources. In 1783 Palace architect John Hawks gave a plan of the Palace gardens to Venezuelan traveler Francisco de Miranda, who was then in New Bern as part of his tour of the newborn United States. Only in 1991 did Tryon Palace researchers discover the plan in the collections of the Academia Nacional de la Historia in Venezuela. This plan suggests a strong French influence instead of the more expected English garden style. The lack of historical and archaeological evidence created a challenge in restoring the gardens in 1955. Landscape architect Morley Williams agreed "to create an appropriate setting for the handsome Georgian brick mansion by having gardens constructed and planted like those which flourished from 1760 to 1770 at comparable estates in Great Britain." Williams tried to balance the idea of an accurate restoration with the desire to create an aesthetically pleasing garden for the modern visitor. The result is a garden that has "an essentially eighteenth century flavor" even if it is not completely accurate in style or plant materials.

We do not ignore the entertainment value; but we consider the enjoyment of national history to be a form of entertainment not sufficiently familiar to Canadians.

Home Search Illinois Cahokia Courthouse, built about 1740, is a unique remnant of the French in Illinois. Constructed as a dwelling about 1730, the building became a courthouse in 1793, and for twenty years it served as a center of political activity in the Old Northwest Territory. The structure was dismantled in 1901, re-erected twice, and reconstructed on its original site in 1939. The Cahokia Courthouse is an excellent example of early French log construction known as poteaux-sur-solle (post-on-sill foundation). The upright hewn logs are seated on a horizontal sill log; the spaces between logs are filled with stone and mortar chinking. The courthouse rests on its original foundation of stone nearly two feet thick. Walnut beams extend the cantilever roof over the porch. Inside are four rooms that originally functioned as a courtroom, a schoolroom, and offices for attorneys and clerks. The Cahokia area was settled in 1698 by priests of the Seminary of Foreign Missions at Quebec who built a log church outpost dedicated to the Holy Family. As missionaries they Christianized local Indian tribes until Jesuit priests disputed their right to convert these tribes. The King of France recognized the Seminary missionaries as the church's sole local representatives, prompting the Jesuits to move south to Kaskaskia where they established a mission among the Kaskaskia tribe.

Home Search Illinois Fort Kaskaskia State Historic Site consists of over 200 acres situated on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River. The site features the remnants of an earthen-work and timber fortification constructed by the French sometime during the mid-1700's. The parapets and dry moat are still visible. The site played a role in Illinois pre-statehood history, from its early involvement with the French to its role in the Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1803. Garrison Hill Cemetery is also part of the historic site. The remains of some 3,000 gravesites were re-interred here. They were removed from several cemeteries on Kaskaskia Island as a result of the flood of 1881, which eventually destroyed the town of Kaskaskia, Illinois, the first state capital. The site offers one of the finest overlooks which affords the vistor a view of the Mississippi River, the mouth of the Kaskaskia River, present day Kaskaskia Island and the site of the original village.
