The merger was facilitated by the decision of the Irish Parliament in College Green Dublin in August 1800 to vote itself out of existence by passing the Act of Union Union Flag Under the terms of the merger, Ireland was to be represented by over 100 MPs in the united parliament, meeting in the Palace of Westminster . Part of the trade-off was to be the granting of Catholic Emancipation . However this was blocked by King George III who argued that emancipating Roman Catholics would breach his Coronation Oath Generations of Irish leaders campaigned to establish home government in Ireland. Daniel O'Connell successfully forced the British Government to grant Catholic Emancipation finally in . However his campaign to 'Repeal' the Act of Union failed. Later leaders such as Charles Stewart Parnell campaigned for a version of Irish self government called Home Rule within membership of the United Kingdom.

It took place from Friday 30 April to Monday 3 May at the Cardiff International Arena. Peter Manson was inducted as President of the Baptist Union of Great Britain and Martin Hodson as President of BMS World Mission. Delegates and attendees were able to participate in seminars, Bible studies, worship and debate. Many appreciated time for private prayer and reflection in the Open Space area. The constitution exists in no one document but is a centuries-old accumulation of statutes, judicial decisions, usage, and tradition. The hereditary monarch, who must belong to the Church of England according to the Act of Settlement of 1701, is almost entirely limited to exercising ceremonial functions. During its course, Britain won an empire in the Seven Years' War , also known as the French and Indian War, but lost its American colonies. It underwent the first stages of the Industrial Revolution and fought a long and bitter struggle against revolutionary and Napoleonic France. The country emerged at the end of his reign as the leading power in Europe, but as one faced with an outmoded constitution and the threat of social revolution. On the personal side, George III's reign was a tragedy. He felt it to be his duty as king to hold an administration together, but he lacked the necessary intellectual power or emotional stability to achieve any long-term objective. Modern party politics grew out of his early efforts to form a stable ministry. He grew politically shrewder in later years, but eventually the pressures of office, dissention with his family, and recurring attacks of hereditary nervous disorder left him bereft of his sanity. George III, the son of Frederick Louis, prince of Wales, and Princess Augusta of Saxe-Gotha, was born on June 4, 1738 (new style). From his parents and their entourage, the young George imbibed an unreasonable dislike of his grandfather, King George II, and all of his policies. George was a child of strong feelings but of slow mental development. This unequal growth of brain and heart made him difficult to teach and too easy to command and produced in him an appearance of apathy; he could not read properly until he was 11. His affection for his immediate family circle dominated his life.

However, it is difficult to estimate what the impact of law making by the European Union will be in future years. To date, most EU laws that have been imposed on the UK (and other members off the EU) have concerned environmental issues. Some political parties in the UK, such as the UK Independence Party, fear that the EU will broaden its net with regards to areas where it will impose legislation. Time will tell. In the UK there are five types of legislation considered by Parliament. These are: Government Bills embody government policy and a Minister introduces them. The bulk of Parliaments time is taken up with these types of bills. As the current government has such a large parliamentary majority, it is almost certain that all Government Bills will be passed into law (though some may be amended along the way). Individual MPs from any political party (or a peer) can introduce a Private Members Bill. These rarely have any chance of becoming law as too much of Parliaments time is taken up with Government bills. As a result of this, Parliament gets little chance to discuss Private Members Bills, let alone vote on them.
