(1) The Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce is hereby designated as the official inspection agency within the State of Mississippi to certify to producers, shippers, and other financially interested parties the grade, quality, or condition of grain crops. Grain crops for the purpose of this chapter shall be those crops for which standards have been established under the United States Grain Standards Act; namely, wheat, oats, corn, barley, rye, flaxseed, soybeans, grain sorghum, and mixed grains and other crops for which standards may hereafter be established. (2) The Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce shall have the sole authority to recommend to the U. S. Department of Agriculture the licensing of inspectors for the purpose of carrying out the inspection, grading and certification of grain inspection under the United States Department of Agriculture Grain Standards Act, except that those persons already licensed as of this date under any other authority may continue to operate in their respective designated areas. (3) The Commissioner of Agriculture and Commerce shall adopt rules and regulations to provide that any grain producer, submitting grain for sale at any elevator in the state, shall be entitled to have that grain graded by an official inspector. The grain producer shall be responsible for and shall pay the cost of grading such sample.

Horsley, Associate Professor; Michael McMullen, Associate Professor; Department of Plant Sciences North Dakota State University Dickinson Research Extension Center Abstract New crop cultivars and advanced experimentals from public and private agencies must be developed for the continued viability of crop and crop-livestock systems. The objective of this research is to identify the genotypes of hard red winter wheat (HRWW), hard red spring wheat (HRSW), durum spring wheat (durum), spring barley (barley), and spring oats (oats) that are best adapted to growing conditions in southwestern North Dakota. To do this, 31 HRWW, 47 HRSW, 39 durum, 18 barley, and 35 oat cultivars were evaluated in separate adaptation experiments at Dickinson in 1997. Selected cultivars of each crop also were evaluated at Hannover, as were HRSW cultivars at Beulah. Arapahoe, CDC Kestrel, Seward, and Roughrider were among the highest yielding cultivars in the HRWW experiment at Dickinson. Differences in yield were not detected at the P Crop production is a significant income generator for southwestern farmers and ranchers. Cash receipts from crops accounted for 52% of total farm income in the South Central, Southwestern, and West Central Crop Reporting Districts in 1994 (Anonymous, 1996). When government payments were considered, more than 57% of farm income came directly from cash receipts for crops. This excludes the value of forages grown and fed directly to livestock on farms.

This vast, rolling state encompasses 93 million acres of mountains, forests, foothills and prairies. A whopping 56.5 million acres or 63 percent of the state's total land is held by farmers and ranchers. Of all the states, Montana is second in the nation with land in farms and ranches, behind only Texas. Montana has some 27,600 working farms and ranches. As of 1997, the last year in which a Census of Agriculture was done, Teton County had 557 active farms encompassing 1.1 million acres of land. Montana's farmers and ranchers are primarily independent family operators with parents and children forming the core workers on their property. Along the East Slope of the Rockies, the farmers are predominantly small-grains producers and cattle ranchers. Since the mid 1990s, the agricultural industry here has been depressed as a combination of factors have led to low grain and cattle prices. Farmers and ranchers here have had to struggle for survival, culling non-producing cattle from their herds, using only the most efficient management practices, and hoping that the economy will again begin to nudge upward. For the past four years, large portions of the land along the Front has received below-normal precipitation, deepening drought conditions. Hope continues that the dry weather pattern will abate in 2003.
