Conservationists say one gorilla population, which contains more than half the world total for the species, has increased its numbers in the last decade. Monitoring shows the Virunga gorillas, on the borders of Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, have increased by at least 11% since 1989. There are estimated to be fewer than 650 mountain gorillas left in the wild. The species is highly endangered, not just because of the years of fighting in the area, but also because of heavy pressure on the forests where the gorillas live. But with the Virunga gorillas now numbering 355 animals, up from 320 in 1989, conservation groups are cautiously encouraged. Hope despite conflict And they believe that even that figure is likely to prove an underestimate.

From a grassy hilltop he looked west across a sweeping view of abandoned farmland and forest. Turning to the east, he faced the park boundary, an abrupt line of forest that rose in misty waves to the summits of the Virunga volcanoes, home to some of the world's last mountain gorillas. "Is anyone here?" he shouted. "It's Mushenzi! Answer me!" It was the end of November 1996. Mushenzi, director of national parks in Congo's province of North Kivu, had come looking for his rangers. A few weeks before, civil war had swept through this region, in the eastern part of the country. Congo (then called Zaire) was awash in refugees, frightened citizens and armed fighters from a variety of factions. Thousands had been killed, most of them civilians. In the first days, movement was impossible and Mushenzi was trapped in the provincial capital of Goma. It was still dangerous in the end of November, but Mushenzi was driven by a sense of missionto hold together Africa's oldest national park while his nation disintegrated.

The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) joined a chorus of other animal rights organisations who demanded the return of the animals, dubbed the "Taiping Four" to a wildlife centre in the west African country. The gorillas arrived in South Africa last week from the Taiping Zoo in Malaysia after a journey lasting more than two years following their initial capture in Cameroon, where their parents were slaughtered for "bush-meat" (including meat from gorillas and monkeys.) Smuggled out of Nigeria on false documentation, they ended up in Kuala Lumpur where the irregularity was discovered, said IFAW spokeswoman Christina Pretorius. A Pretoria zoo filed an application to host the primates and was successful, receiving the animals on April 14. Animal welfare organisations said the gorillas should be returned to their country of origin in accordance with the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) regulations.
