    Extractions: Gorilla Classification Debate Gorillas live in Central Africa, in the band of forest that spans the equator, stretching from Nigeria in the west to Uganda in the east. There are two major geographic groups of gorillas: Eastern gorillas and Western gorillas. Western gorillas show a variety of genetic, morphological, behavioral and ecological traits that are different from the better known Eastern gorillas, and the two groups are now classified by most scientists as distinct species. The bulk of the western gorilla population is found in the lowland tropical forests of Gabon, Congo-Brazzaville, Cameroon and the Central African Republic, with smaller populations found in Equatorial Guinea and Nigeria. Nigeria is home to the Cross River gorilla, a small isolated population of western gorillas that is thought to number around 200. This population is classified by some scientists as a different subspecies to other western gorillas. The major threat faced by all western gorillas is the commercial bushmeat trade.

    Extractions: Harry is a fully-grown adult gorilla. Adult males are known as a silverback because of the silvery grey hair on their back. This shows that he is the dominant male. Lena is much smaller than Harry and generally females are only half the size of the males. Gorillas used to be thought of as very aggressive, dangerous animals and films like King Kong did nothing to improve their reputation. However gorillas have been studied and proved to be very gentle and calm. However if he feels threatened a male will stand up and slap his chest with cupped hands whilst roaring. This is just a display intended to frighten away any threat. If this does not work, he will make a bluff charge, rushing towards the intruder but either stopping short or rushing past. Gorillas spend their days at quite a leisurely pace, eating, resting and playing. Gorillas walk on all fours keeping their feet flat and their hands in a fist with all the weight resting on the knuckles. It now appears that chimps, gorillas, and humans form a clade of closely related species; orangutans are slightly less close phylogenetically, and gibbons are a more distant branch. Here we follow a classification reflecting those relationships. Chimps, gorillas, humans, and orangutans make up the family Hominidae; gibbons are separated as the closely related Hylobatidae. Thus constituted, the Hominidae includes 4 genera and 5 species. Its nonhuman members are restricted to equatorial Africa, Sumatra and Borneo. The Great Apes Survival Project (GRASP) targets 23 areas where gorillas, orangutans, chimpanzees, bonobos, and other primates are near extinction as a result of war, habitat destruction, and poaching for trophies, souvenirs, and meat. It seems grotesque that the peaceful bonobos cannot escape the chaos of civil war in Congo. Pacifism happens to be the principal attribute of bonobos, very unlike their aggressive human relatives. Experts estimates that in five to ten years some of these primates will be extinct across most of their range. Not one species of primates has been lost in the past century, but now 25 species of apes, monkeys, lemurs and other primates are imperiled and may soon disappear.
