It is in this context that the Weather Underground appeared. And in a milieu that was open to most tactical approaches, theirs stood out. The thing that made them stand out most was that they seemed to have the predictable guaranteed effect of turning people against the cause that they were ostensibly meant to advance. The Weather Underground was into violence. Now, I am not among those with any spiritual or philosophical problems with violence. It has its uses, both in self defense and occasionally for other things. But one rule usually holds, which is that it is almost always a real bad idea to TALK about using violence. It gives your enemies not only a big stick of an argument to beat you, and anyone else who supports the same cause with, it allows them far more freedom to do what they do best, which is to beat you with a physical big stick. They have lots of people on their payroll who have trouble making coherent arguments, but are wizards with batons, tear gas, pistols, shotguns, wire taps, , etc. But when they use these "arguments", they usually look real bad to a lot of people, unless you give them a good excuse. The irony is that most of them undoubtedly believe that the solution to the problem lies in people invoking scripture more often, and not less. The idea that this is an isolated incident caused by a few bad-apple M.P. reservists is ridiculous.
