Extractions: by Ernest W. Adams Quite a few years ago now, Electronic Arts published a game called Patton versus Rommel , about a hypothetical matchup between two of World War IIs greatest generals. In reality, Patton and Rommel never faced one another Rommel was invalided home to Germany with injuries before Patton arrived in Normandy. In the tradition of most wargames, you could play either side take Pattons army and try to fight your way into Normandy, or take Rommels and push the Allies back into the sea. If you took Rommels side, you were obviously playing in support of the Nazi regime. The game didnt address the moral question that this raises; it was a straightforward wargame about troops and tanks, battle and maneuver. Wargames tend to avoid social or political issues to concentrate on purely military ones. Each side is fighting to achieve its objectives without any reference to their motivations or the rights of the situation. Risk is a nice case in point every player is trying to take over the world, but none of them has an agenda or a political ideology. Its a simple, symbolic wargame.

There had , for many years, been regional differences between the south and north in the areas of taxes, tariffs and westward expansion. The South's power structure especially feared for the elimination of slavery. Muslims are good folks. One fellow e-mailed me quite convinced that Muslims lop off the heads of every infidel they meet. I've been a guest in the homes of many Muslim friends, and the only thing they lopped off were extra servings of lamb. People believe such nonsense because they are ignorant of the facts. The oldest Christian communities in the world are in Muslim countries. Some of the oldest Jewish communities in the world are in Muslim countries. The deputy foreign minister of Iraq is a Christian. Saddam Hussein donated $1 million to help build a Christian church in the United States. There are Christians in prACactically all Muslim countries, and there have been for centuries. I've said all this before, but when lies blow strong, truth bears repeating. Islam, like other religions, has different groups. Some are strict in their observances, and they might be likened to the Christian Pilgrims who settled Massachusetts. But even the most strict commonly called fundamentalists these days know that a Muslim is commanded to treat Jews and Christians "as I would treat myself," in the words of a Hamas leader.

It is in this context that the Weather Underground appeared. And in a milieu that was open to most tactical approaches, theirs stood out. The thing that made them stand out most was that they seemed to have the predictable guaranteed effect of turning people against the cause that they were ostensibly meant to advance. The Weather Underground was into violence. Now, I am not among those with any spiritual or philosophical problems with violence. It has its uses, both in self defense and occasionally for other things. But one rule usually holds, which is that it is almost always a real bad idea to TALK about using violence. It gives your enemies not only a big stick of an argument to beat you, and anyone else who supports the same cause with, it allows them far more freedom to do what they do best, which is to beat you with a physical big stick. They have lots of people on their payroll who have trouble making coherent arguments, but are wizards with batons, tear gas, pistols, shotguns, wire taps, , etc. But when they use these "arguments", they usually look real bad to a lot of people, unless you give them a good excuse. Enter the Weather folk.

Kerry defended the rights of slaveholders in the face of mounting criticism from Christian clergy, who call slavery immoral and an affront to Christianity. Responding to abolitionists picketing the rally with signs saying ''Shame, shame Mr. Kerry,'' he said that as a Christian he personally opposes slavery but supports the rights of property owners. Spokesman David Wade said Sen. Kerry believes the separation of church and state ''helped make religious affiliation a non-issue in American politics.'' He urged leadership to ''protect the right of choice,'' noting that the Supreme Court upheld the right of slave ownership in the 1857 Dred Scott decision. Sen. Kerry graciously agreed to a question and answer session. Following are excerpts from our conversation. Sen. Kerry, what is your basic position on this issue? ''Slavery should be rare, but it should be safe and legal, and the government should stay off of the plantation.'' Do you believe slavery is permitted under our Constitution?

To effect real political change in America we have to help the first group gain more influence than the second. This week NBC is broadcasting Late Night With Conan O'Brien from Canada, and Canadians should feel flattered and grateful for the attention. But on Tuesday when Conan mentioned President Bush during his opening monologue, the Toronto audience immediately started booing. Similar sentiments toward U.S. politicians (and soldiers) are unfortunately very common in Canada. We Canadians like to differentiate ourselves from Americans: we pride ourselves on being socially responsible racially tolerant pacifists; we stick maple leaves all over our clothes and luggage when we travel, because we've been told that Europeans and others are always happy to hear that we're from Canada and not the United States; we sympathize with people who believe that the United States is imposing a double-standard when they demand that other nations eliminate their weapons of mass destruction while the U.S. spends billions of dollars developing their own WMD's; we groan when Americans justify their nuclear weapons and aircraft carriers by saying It's okay: we're the good guys. We would never abuse our power;

Extractions: Syd Allan: Who Should We Blame For Iraqi Prisoner Abuse? www.jagular.com/iraqi-prisoners.shtml May 2, 2004 I think that Southern Baptists and other American fundamentalist Christians should accept a fair part of the blame for the recent abuse of prisoners in the American military-controlled Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq. The irony is that most of them undoubtedly believe that the solution to the problem lies in people invoking scripture more often, and not less. The idea that this is an isolated incident caused by a few bad-apple M.P. reservists is ridiculous. The New York Times and NPR and other liberal media outlets will demand that we search up along the chain of command to find the real cause of the problem (and I'm not just talking about the chain that leads to Brig. Gen. Janis Karpinski, although Section Three of Army Maj. Gen. Antonio M. Taguba's Article 15-6 Investigation of the 800th Military Police Brigage report does make her look pretty incompetent), but the average American will not have the patience for that. The Bush administration, along with Clear Channel and Fox News and the other organizations that pander to the average idiot will treat this situation using the same approach that got us into this mess in the first place: by conducting a witch-hunt to put everyone (in this case, everyone in the U.S. military) into two groups the Bad People, and everyone else. Then they will punish the Bad People in a dramatic way, and wash their hands clean of the whole thing. Then it's back to church to sing about how morally upright they all are.

Arguments that have been demolished rise up and must be answered again and again and again, because no canonical answers to these spurious accusations exists. I'm sure some of you are familiar with the litany: "Only poor ghetto kids are fighting over there," "America was convinced to go to war with Iraq based on the presence of Weapons of Mass Destruction," "America only goes to war against People of Color," and so on. Weevil's tired of explaining, again and again, why these claims are bogus. So am I. A FAQ should be developed, which can be referred to by those who want to debunk these tiresome, spurious claims. I would happily contribute to such a project, but I just don't have the energy to spearhead the effort. I would, on the other hand, be happy to provide input and resources, such as mailing lists and web space, to help make it happen. Such a project would require a small group of leaderstwo or three people at most I would thinkto guide contributors. To be clear, this could not be a "democratic" effort: someone would have to be in charge of determining what makes sense vs. what does not, what's merely partisan point-scoring vs. what are legitimately fair answers to spurious accusations.

The French family is not about to fall apart, and France's healthcare system is better than anything across the English Channel. That said, a death toll on the scale that occurred was more than a series of individual tragedies, and it deserves more of a response than it seems to have got. Writing for Austria's Format magazine, Christian Ortner has not been impressed: ""European intellectuals went wild when the electricity failed in Baghdad. We are in show #33 in our series on Mind Control, and today we are going to hear a presentation, The Secret History of Mind Control, given by Walter Bowart at the Ritual Trauma Child Abuse and Mind Control Conference in Atlanta in October, 1997. Walter Bowart is an investigative journalist and author of one of the original books about mind control in the late seventies entitled, Operational Mind Control. And now, Walter Bowart: Introduction by Sylvia Gillotte: I guess Walter almost needs no introduction because he was really probably the first person to publicly write about mind control and its origins and so forth. His book, Operation Mind Control, is available at his table at the back. Most recently Walter was involved as a consultant in the making of the movie, Conspiracy Theory, and some of you may have seen him actually interviewed for an HBO special promoting the movie. It was the first time I ever got to see what Walter looked like so I could recognize him when he came. He has the Freedom of Thought Foundation, which he will tell you about. He is going to share his information with you, so welcome Walter. Walter Bowart: I would like to thank some people. I was going to save it until the end but I want to get it right up front since a couple of them are here. I would like to thank Mike Coyle for what he contributed to this. What you are going to see is a series of out-takes, some are from videos, and a lot of them are still ... it's a very rough presentation of what's going to be a documentary. I would like to thank Mike Coyle who is retired from the field. He had the Mindnet Journal which was on the internet, and he did a terrific job of research. He is finding that a lot of the critical things that we are going to talk about as we get toward the end of this show, are actually removed from journals ... pages torn out of academic research journals and things. Somebody doesn't want this information out.
