Extractions: The organization lost its architect and Dean lost a close friend in April when General Manager John Butler passed away following a nine-month battle with cancer. A loss of such magnitude could have had a devastating emotional and psychological impact on a close-knit organization like the Chargers, but Spanos' calming influence and leadership orchestrated a smooth and seamless transition from Butler to new General Manager A.J. Smith. Dean and his father, Alex, once again provided the financial backing to give Smith and Head Coach Marty Schottenheimer the means to improve the team. The most prominent addition came when the Chargers signed Pro Bowl wide receiver David Boston to a $40 million contract. Every time his staff asked, Spanos provided by signing top free agents, including Boston, fullback Lorenzo Neal, tackle Solomon Page and safety Kwamie Lassiter.
