This week, Education World invited our "Principal Files" principals to share the goals they have set for the school year that just got underway. One restriction: Nobody was allowed to say "raise test scores" because that goal is a given! The goals those principals shared are as varied as the schools they represent. Learn what principals had to say in this article, which stands as a lesson in Goal Setting 101. Included: Goals related to curriculum, motivating teachers, involving parents, more! Principal Deborah Harbin has one main goal this year. "I want to be in the classrooms more and have professional conversations with teachers about curriculum and instruction," Harbin told Education World. "The work of the school happens in the classrooms. If I want to influence my school, then that's where I need to be."

It gives you a clear avenue of communication. Let's face it, your job is a lot easier and more rewarding if your swimmers know why they are swimming a set of 20 x 100's, why they need to develop a six beat kick to finish the 400 I.M., why streamlining is so important, how to set personal practice and performance goals, and how to have a clear and positive self image. The important uniqueness of this workbook is not its information, though I have included the best and most up-to-date knowledge from the scientific and elite coaching community (with a bibliography to lead your athletes directly to the horse's mouths in areas of biomechanics, sport psychology, and physiology, personal leadership development, as well as to world ranking lists, etc.). "I just can't seem get a handle on things," laments your grown child. "Can I move back home?" If you think your children would never do this to you, think again. More and more young adults, many of whom are up to their ears in debt, can't afford to live on their own. Unfortunately, teaching money lessons to kids is one of those sensitive subjects many busy parents would rather avoid. But financial literacy is an increasingly important issue facing children of all ages-one that parents first have to master themselves. Long before they can add and subtract, children know about money. They see their parents putting coins into parking meters or "magically" receiving money from the ATM. They rip open birthday cards and shake them upside-down to see how much cash flutters to the floor. "Good money habits begin at an early age," says Chris Farrell, the economics editor at Minnesota Public Radio and a contributing economics editor to

After choosing six students through a college-like application process, which included recommendations and a personal statement, Nielsen set out to develop her students' knowledge of Mexican culture and history through after-school club sessions. The culmination of the project was an educational eight-day tour of Mexico, for which she and her students together raised $8,000. In June 1997, they left Baltimore to visit ancient Mayan sites, to scale the Teotihuacan pyramids, and to take a swim in the Caribbean Sea. This year Nielsen is working with fellow corps member Autumn De Vos ('97) to prepare 24 sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade students from Poole Middle School and the Guilford School for a similar trip. With last year's experience under her belt, Nielsen has worked with De Vos to develop Project Mexico into a holistic, seven-month program that challenges students to reach their fullest potential as they develop community and global awareness skills. As members of Project Mexico, the students meet weekly to discuss fund-raising activities and the progress they are making towards their $30,000 goal. They hold bake sales, sell candy, organize school dances, and write to possible donors. By the beginning of last month, they had raised just $22,000.

A savings account is best for younger teens, but older teens should know how to use a checking account. Teach your teen how to write and record checks and how to balance statements. Teach Savvy Shopping Skills Encourage your teen to comparison shop by checking prices with different retailers. Show them how to save money by buying generic brands or shopping at thrift shops. Make sure they grasp the concept of unit pricing so they better understand what they are getting for their money. If you believe your child is spending too much money on frivolous things, have him or her create an expense log showing exactly where the money is going. Your teen may not even realize how much money is being spent on snacks, entertainment, and other activities. This can help put spending habits into perspective and inspire your teen to change his or her ways.

Extractions: Teach Your Children How to Set and Achieve Goals by Elizabeth Hamilton Comment on this Column! One of the most important skills parents can teach their children for success in school as well as in life is how to set and achieve goals. Here are eight proven ideas you can use at home to teach your children how to set and reach their goals for doing chores, getting ready for school, completing homework assignments and school projects, or achieving a better grade on the next report card. 1. Choose the Goal Sit down with your child and talk about the things you would like for him to accomplish. In the beginning, set goals for your child that relate directly to home or school. Some examples of home goals are "I will keep my room neat and clean" or "I will do my chores everyday without being reminded." Examples of academic goals are "I will master my times tables" or "I will complete my homework assignment everyday." Later, allow children to choose their own goals.
Develop New Understanding Of The Subjects They Teach The National Education Goals set forth in the 1994 Educate America Act call for our the gap between what students need to know and what teachers need to teach. http://www.ncrel.org/sdrs/areas/issues/educatrs/profdevl/pd2devel.htm
Extractions: Retooling the Education Workforce The National Education Goals set forth in the 1994 Educate America Act call for our children to become world leaders in math and science. But they'll never reach that lofty status if our teachers aren't equipped to take them there. The Teachers Academy for Mathematics and Science is closing the gap between what students need to know and what teachers need to teach. The Academy dispels the notion that all teachers enter the classroom with the same knowledge and skills, and that once trained, teachers need little enhancement or additional knowledge. In reality, many teachers fall below the minimum baseline standard for math and science. According to the National Research Council, many teachers' education includes only one course in mathematics. In science, fewer than 30 percent of elementary teachers have taken college-level science courses within the past five years. So while both state and federal governments properly demand that teachers change their instructional practices, they have underestimated the extent to which teachers need to retool. To meet those new standards, teachers need to expand their basic understanding of math and science and acquire new skills and teaching techniques.
Better Sheep Management Plan Development Once you have set your goals, you know Perhaps in your family, raising sheep to teach children responsibility, sharing and meeting people http://www.case-agworld.com/cAw.LUsheepmanag.html
Extractions: State Sheep, Goat and Small Livestock Specialist In any livestock enterprise and especially in a sheep operation, management is the name of the game. Good management involves more than raising sheep, selling lambs and wool, and paying bills. To be profitable, it requires a method of controlling production factors all year and being prepared to be flexible to meet change that is always inevitable. Good sheep management is a process of goal setting, developing plans and organization. Management requires knowledge of specifics about a sheep operation such as feed costs, lamb gains, wool weights, lambing rate, number of lambs marketed per ewe, interest rates, selection, reproduction and health. The first step to improved management is goal setting. Now is the time to set your goals for 19978 Determine your present lambing rate, weaning rate, 60-90-120-day weights, present marketing strategy, feed costs and health program. Put your goals into writing. Set goals that are achievable in 1998. Calculate your present lambing rate, feed costs, weaning weights, etc. Then set goals to raise those that are reasonable. For example, if your lambing rate is 125% in 1997, set your goal for 1998 above that with a reasonable increase, let us say 135%. More than likely, your lambing rate is high enough but you lost too many of those lambs and your weaning rate can more easily be increased in 1998.

In your role as a teacher you can help the students develop certain skills that will help make the organization more effective and that they can use in the future. Kathleen Allen, in the December, 1979 issue of Programming Magazine, outlined eleven skills that she recommends be taught to students through consistent, planned advising. Divided into the categories of accomplishing tasks, improving relationships, and self-improvement, her outline provides a clear, comprehensive "lesson plan" for advisors to utilize in their efforts toward student skill development. Skills for Accomplishing Tasks Problem Solving: the ability to solve problems creatively. The process includes these components: identify the real problem, assess all components of the problem, weigh what is relevant, pursue alternatives, and identify a solution. Example: developing a policy. Planning and Organization: the ability to set goals and coordinate a variety of human and material resources to accomplish these goals. Example: producing a specific event.
Extractions: It has been said that a goal is "a dream with a deadline." Educators know that one of the best ways to give children the motivation to reach their dreams is by teaching them how to set achievable goals, reach them, and then set even higher goals. Here's a step-by-step approach you can use at home to teach children how to reach their goals in doing chores, getting ready for school on time, doing homework, or achieving a better grade on that math test. Choose an attainable goal. Kids want to change the world. That's great but they can be frustrated when it doesn't happen right away. Your job is to help your child choose a goal that can be reached. She can't eliminate world hunger but she can work at a soup kitchen or help the needy. The best goals are those that make children stretch, reach and grow but are within their sights. Choosing a goal that is impossible to achieve will defeat your child before she begins. How to achieve goals.
