Kraft and James Kielsmeier. Both sources are available through the AEE office. They made a decision. They seem happy and are all working together! I never thought that finishing that project could be so easy. A week ago they barely knew each others' names. They are showing some leadership now! Have you ever said this to yourself? Do you wonder how it happened? Did you do this on purpose? Teaching leadership means facilitating an experience through which students gain insight, increase understanding, and practice leadership. Many experiential educators teach leadership implicitly, and could easily adapt their programs to explicitly provide a leadership learning experience. Congruency between how a leadership program is run and what is taught is important. The collection of activities which they experience consciously and directly, is not the whole program. Indirectly, methods such as modeling what is taught and facilitating experiences sneak up behind the students and nudge them toward understanding. We are doing our best when the ways that we nudge are consistent with what we are putting consciously before them.

What should I be teaching them about money? C.P. Dear C.P., Given the complexity of personal finance and investing nowadays, it's a constant challenge for parents to prepare their kids well to manage money on their own. Unfortunately, it seems that many young adults are really not prepared at allaccording to the Consumer Bankruptcy Project, a staggering 94,000 people under the age of 25 declared bankruptcy in 2001. We asked members of the Armchair Millionaire community for their opinions on what's most important to teach kids about money and heard a wide range of ideas. Here are just two: "Children need to learn about delayed gratification and goal setting, and to be given money choices early in life." Ken "Teach your children that they only need ONE credit card. And teach them how to use it wisely and pay it off each month." Michelle Kids todayand especially teenshave more money than ever before. That means it's more important than ever to instill sound financial habits from an early age. My guide provides some of the basics you should be teaching your children at every age level.

Director's Message By Mary Odenbach I teach 9-12 English in a small Wyoming school. My school district is one of 46 in the state that collaborated as an educational consortium to develop fair and reliable assessments that demonstrate student proficiency in core knowledge and skills. These assessments plus other measurements like the state test and other achievement tests, create a Body of Evidence that reveals a clear picture of our students' knowledge and skills. As I understand it, our state chose this path over high-stakes testing. This path has had a profound effect on how I go about teaching. I want to share how I learned to use technology to support a standards-based approach to teaching English. As a teacher, I value using the Body of Evidence Consortium Activities for several reasons but the main one is that these assessments have focused my teaching. I went from jumping from topic to topic, trying to cover as much material as I could, to purposefully teaching specific, critical knowledge.

Extractions: More Be a Role Model Articles The following tips can help you and your children successfully set and achieve your goals: Be specific. When thinking about your goal, be as exact as possible. People who set specific goals are more likely to succeed. For example, instead of saying that you want to save money, set a specific goal to save $20 (or whatever your goal amount is) per week. Put it in writing. Write down exactly what you want to achieve and post it in a place where you will see it every day. This will help remind you what you're working toward. When you write, use positive terms. For example, instead of writing, "I will stop eating junk food" re-word your goal in more positive terms: "I will make healthy food choices."

Extractions: Teach Your Teenager How To Manage A Summer Salary Summer jobs give teens newfound freedom and money to spend. Just how well your teen handles his or her first paycheck may set a precedent for life. Here's some advice from the California Society of CPAs ( www.calcpa.org ) that may help your teen make the most of his or her summer salary and develop a solid basis for future financial success. Set a Good Example Parents should provide a good example of financial responsibility and involve their children in money management activities. It's important that teenagers see their parents live within their means and practice sound money management budgeting, setting long-term financial goals, making wise purchases, saving and investing. Start by reviewing the family budget and making your teen aware of monthly bills. Demonstrate how saving helps you buy the things your family needs, rather than charging. Also, explain your investment plans and strategy. Teach Them to Save and Spend Wisely Once your teenager gets a steady paycheck, demonstrate how to save and spend. In other words, help them develop a budget. Establish three categories: essential purchases, savings, and discretionary items. Discuss and agree upon the essential items you expect your teenager's paycheck to cover. This may include car insurance, gas, telephone bills, or school lunches. After establishing essential expenditures, set a savings goal with your teen, but be sure money is left over for fun. Your teen will be quickly disillusioned with working if there's no money to play with.

Success Stories HOME Free Consultation Free Newsletter ... Practicing Patience Why Set Goals? By Karim Hajee Recently I haddinner with an old friend who had decided to relocate and get a fresh start in life. He explained he was going through some changes and was at that point in life where he was comfortable but not enthusiastic anymore. As we continued talking I asked him what his next goals were in life? And what he wanted to do next? "Why, I haven't got any." He said in a dumbfounded way. "I didn't think I needed to set goals. I thought I could just go on like I always have." My friend's response seems to be typical of a number of people. I say this because I've often heard similar responses in the years that I've been teaching my Creating Power System. Unfortunately, my friend and those like him are missing the point because we really do need to set goals - otherwise we end up getting frustrated or lose all enthusiasm for life. I'll explain shortly.
