We commit to running five times a week and eating broccoli with every meal. But by the second week in January weâre often back to our old routine of TV and Twinkies. Why is it that, despite the exhortations of motivational speakers, goal setting just doesnât work? I used to begin financial workshops by asking people to write down a couple of goals. By making the workshop personal, I reasoned, participants would be more engaged. I quickly became fascinated with this contrast: While it is relatively easy to teach people how to break goals down to monthly price tags and how to use a budget to pursue their accomplishment, it is often extremely difficult to get people to take the next steps. I still begin workshops by asking people to write down some of their financial goals. But Iâve learned two additional steps that are essential in setting goals that have the best possible chance of being accomplished.

Learning how to speak French maybe fun and may even have some real value if one travels to France or other French speaking countries, but since English is the International Language other languages are not priorities. History, Science, and Math are huge subjects that one can study forever. Obviously some basic parts of those subjects should be considered a priority and taught at a pre-college level, but many abstract topics like Trigonometry and Calculus can be saved for college focuses. No matter what one does, the ability to define goals and focus work is crucial. While schools are labeling record numbers of students as "mentally disordered" ( ADD ) because those students are unable to focus, the schools are spending virtually no time teaching those kids how to focus. Since goal setting is an undeniably crucial skill, more important than most of the stuff taught in schools , an entire subject, "goal setting" should be introduced.

The top of the letter, which Lee wrote in 1970, has stamped on it "secret." It starts out, "By 1980 I will be the best known oriental movie star in the United States and will have secured 10 million dollars." The most interesting part of this letter, however, was the second partthe part often omitted when we sit down with our gymnasts to set goals. Lee goes on to write, "And in return I will give the very best acting I could possibly give every single time I am in front of the camera and I will live in peace and harmony." How fascinating that Lee wrote he would have peace and harmony after he said what he would do to obtain his goal. Similarly, Michael Johnson, the Olympic champion sprinter, had a goal to win the 200 and 400 meters sprint at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. The problem, however, was that the 200 and the 400 were traditionally run on the same day. This would have made it almost impossible for him to win because of recovery time. After setting this goal, Johnson remembered something his father asked him every time he set a goal when he was a young person. "What are you going to do about it? and "Now that you have a goal, how are you going to achieve it?" Johnson developed a workout regime with his coach that involved specific weight training, stretching and running intervals five days a week. In addition, he petitioned the Olympic Committee daily to move the 200 and the 400 meters to different days.

This year, concentrating on alternative assessment, I was inspired to try it. I've really struggled over the most meaningful way to do this. Would it be too hard for 5 year old children to understand? I decided to use the basketball goal analogy. I brought our portable basketball goal into the classroom with the word "Goals" on it. We talked about what shooting for a goal meant in basketball. We talked about how to be good at getting a goal one had to practice and practice. We talked about how you had to practice to become good at anything. When we make a "goal" it means we decide on something we want to get better at or something we want to learn or something we want to do. I showed them the Professional Development Plan that teachers are asked me to do each year...and talked about what my goals were going to be for the year. Then we talked about what were school (learning) goals and what were home goals I gave examples of each kind.
