MIT Center For Global Change Science An interdisciplinary academic research organization that conducts scientific investigationon issues of global environmental change at the Massachusetts http://web.mit.edu/cgcs/www/
Extractions: Associate Director Rafael L. Bras PERSONNEL REPORTS RESEARCH ... CONTACT The Center for Global Change Science CGCS ) at MIT was established in January, 1990, to address long-standing scientific problems that impede our ability to accurately predict changes in the global environment. The CGCS is interdisciplinary , involving both research and education , and builds on the long-established programs in meteorology oceanography hydrology chemistry , and satellite remote sensing carried out in the Schools of Science and Engineering at MIT. In addition, the CGCS , along with the MIT Center for Energy and Environmental Policy Research CEEPR ), is a parent organization of the MIT Joint Program on the Science and Policy of Global Change , which involves significant cross-discipline interaction The long-term goal of the CGCS is to utilize theory and observations to understand the basic processes and mechanisms controlling the global environment, and thereby to accurately predict environmental changes. Initial objectives involve a sustained program of basic scientific research focused on five fundamental processes in the global climate machine: Convection, Atmospheric Water Vapor, and Cloud Formation

MIT Joint Program On The Science & Policy Of Global Change at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology that conducts research, analysis, and public communication on issues of global environmental change, with a http://web.mit.edu/globalchange/www/
Extractions: The Joint Program combines the capabilities of two pre-existing MIT research centers: the CENTER FOR GLOBAL CHANGE SCIENCE and the CENTER FOR ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY RESEARCH . It brings together an interactive group of faculty, staff and student researchers. Resources of the parent centers are strengthened by links to the MARINE BIOLOGICAL LABORATORY'S ECOSYSTEMS CENTER in Woods Hole, Mass., to the MIT CLIMATE MODELING INITIATIVE , and other MIT environmental programs. The Program's work is focused on the integration of natural and social science aspects of the climate issue, to produce analyses relevant to ongoing national and international discussions. Cooperative efforts engage the Program with leading research institutions and non-profit organizations worldwide. Financial support is provided by and international group of sponsors from government organizations, foundations, and industry.

Extractions: Graduate Research Environmental Fellowships (GREF) The GREF program began in June 1999 to support graduate students in the Office of Biological and Environmental Research-funded collaborative global change research at universities and national laboratories. All qualified students are encouraged to apply, but minority and female students are particularly encouraged. The fellowship program makes three-year appointments, renewable annually, and pays an annual stipend of $19,200 ($1,500 monthly plus a $600 Research Education Supplement in March and October), and tuition and fees. Graduate students selected for GREF are encouraged to participate in the SURE 2004 orientation and research focus sessions. If you decide to participate, GREF will pay transportation, per diem and lodging. Applicants must have completed their first year in graduate school, unless they have participated previously in SOARS or SURE. Applicants are required to complete the application form, and submit a five-page description of proposed research, letters of recommendation from the two mentors and an outside individual, and undergraduate and graduate transcripts. The deadline for the submission of applications will be February 2, 2004

Potential Effects Of Global Change On Bats Article by Michael A. Bogan, a Research Biologist of USGC, and Professor at University of New Mexico. Pictures, map, and resources included. http://geochange.er.usgs.gov/sw/impacts/biology/bats/
Extractions: and Research Professor of Biology, University of New Mexico Figure 1. Mexican big-eared bat Idionycteris phyllotis . Largely a forest dweller inhabiting caves in pine-oak forests. (Photograph by Dr. J. Scott Altenbach. Department of Biology, University of New Mexico) Other species of bats, especially in temperate zones, are insectivorous and collectively consume large quantities of insects. Just as pollinating activities of bats are important to plant ecology, the insectivorous food habits of bats play an important role in maintaining a balance among insect populations. Although studies of bats have demonstrated some flexibility in food habits over time, most species appear to be specialized to pursue and capture selected kinds or categories of insects. Furthermore, bats are dependent upon a reliable and consistent "supply" of prey, even though specific insect populations grow and disappear over the course of a summer season. Changes in worldwide insect population occurrence or distribution can be expected to affect numbers and species diversity of bats. Figure 2.
