Extractions: The exhibition which this display documents was a long time in the planning. Many people helped with the work involved. In 1979-80, a group of graduate students in the Department of the History of Art and the Interdepartmental Program in Classical Art and Archaeology participated in an introductory study unit with me a learning experience which did much to bring ideas for the exhibition into focus. The members of this group were Mary Ann Eaverly, Julia Eisendrath, Lauren Arnold, Nick Stavrinides, and Ann van Rosevelt. Julia Eisendrath continued on to devote much time and thought to a meticulous inventory of the glass collections in the Museum. This was a laborious project, essential to the efficient production of the exhibition. Two graduate students arrived fresh on the scene in 1981-82: Victoria Weston (History of Art and Japanese Studies) and Laurie McCoy (Classical Art and Archaeology). I am most grateful to them for their cheerful industriousness through a long winter of snowy forays to the Graduate Library. Laurie McCoy saw the project through to its completion, collaborating with me on research. In addition, Prof. John D'Arms, Ms. Norma Jenkins (Research Librarian at the Corning Museum of Glass), Dr. Aileen Gatten, and Prof. Charles Witke have provided indispensable help on specific scholarly problems from the topography of Puteoli, to Sino-Roman relations in antiquity and obscure Chinese rhapsodists, to vexing questions of mirrors and metaphors, Isidorus, and Alexander's glass submarine.

The idea of blending her earlier love of sewing and working with cloth with her stained glass designs took shape when she mentioned the idea to friend, an experienced quilter and quilt shop owner. She discovered that the two passions blend and compliment each other very well. Lise began her stained glass career under the influence of the northern landscape and extraordinary northern lifestyle. The unique images are now available to create fabric wallhangings by using reverse appliqué and machine quilting techniques.

Extractions: Photographic materials have complex physical and chemical structures that present special preservation challenges to the librarian and archivist. Since the birth of photography in the late 1830s, many different photographic processes and materials have been utilized, each subject to deterioration through time and with use. Although deterioration is an ongoing natural process, nevertheless much can be done to slow the rate at which it takes place in photographs. Deteriorated photographs may require specialized conservation treatment by a professional photograph conservator, often a costly, skill-demanding, and time-consuming procedure. For the majority of photographs in research collections, single-item conservation of deteriorated photographs is probably not a feasible or a cost-effective preservation solution. Instead, preventive conservation actions such as and maintenance of a good environment, promoting proper care and handling through staff and user education, and the use of good quality storage housings, will have a more lasting, positive impact on the preservation of a collection.

Extractions: The versatility of this new technology was quickly apparent and gave the lampworker several important advantages over the glassblower. Because the lampworker was able to selectively heat the object by directing the flame at a specific area, he could realize exacting procedures which were extremely difficult for the off-hand glassblower, who could only reheat the entire piece all at once. Additionally, as the energy demands of lampworking were just a tiny fraction of those of glassblowing, it was much more economical and lampworked creations could be afforded by common people. By the beginning of the 18th century localized industries devoted to making small items for public consumption had sprung up all over Europe. The town of Nevers, France, was noted for tiny figurines of people and farm animals which were so popular that their production continued until the beginning of this century. The village of Lauscha, Germany, was entirely employed in the making of Christmas ornaments at the lamp. Venice itself employed lampworking techniques in making beads and millefiori, tiny murrines that looked like flowers.
