A river of ice: This sense of a glacier is often more clear from a distance. What is a Glacier? Quite briefly, it's a permanent, moving body of ice. Or, as it's often phrased, a river of ice. Glaciers are formed when snow falls in an environment so cold that not all the snow has time to melt during the summer. Over a period of years, the weight of new snow forces out the air trapped by previous layers. Fallen snow compresses into ice. Meltwater from the top trickles down, and refreezes, On a mountainside, or any area that's not flat, the weight of this ice eventually causes it to slowly flow, or creep , downhill. The snow compresses under its own weight, gradually turning into ice. Under the force of gravity and its enormous weight, the glacier becomes fluid, and creeps slowly downhill. Apron glaciers cling to mountainsides, and generally have a localized origin. In contrast, valley glaciers literally fill valleys, and they often originate from large icefields. A valley glacier that reaches the sea is termed a tidewater glacier, and they usually terminate in a vertical wall of ice, often 200' - 300' high. Watching and hearing these glaciers calve ice into the sea with a tremendous roar is the highlight of many folks' visit to the Sound. Ten of the Sound's 17 tidewater glaciers are concentrated in College and Harriman Fjords.

Those glaciers are melting faster than scientists had previously thought, according to the study by geologist Mark Meier, who presented his findings at a meeting of the American Geophysical Union in Boston on Tuesday. "The glaciers are receding and they're becoming thinner, and you can see this," Meier said, placing the blame squarely on global warming. The melting ice caps are contributing to rising sea levels that lead to beach erosion and more severe inland storms, he said. And rivers are jumping their banks more often as a result.

That is the main conclusion reached after studies conducted on the Chacaltaya glacier in Bolivia and the Antizana glacier in Ecuador. Performed by French scientists from Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IRD) in France and their Bolivian and Ecuadorian partners, mass balance assessments for these two glaciers indicate that their shrinkage rate has accelerated markedly over the past ten or so years. If this ice recession continues at the same pace, their survival will be jeopardized even in the short term. The researchers stress that the recent quickening of glacial melt in the Andes corresponds with the greater intensity and frequency of El Niño events observed over the same period. Andean glaciers are particularly sensitive to climatic fluctuations owing to the position of most of them in the tropics and to the specific mechanisms by which they function. (In contrast with the glaciers in the Alps, which undergo a long period of accumulation in winter, glaciers in the tropics are subject to a permanent regime of ablation in the lower half of their mass, which makes them sensitive to the slightest sudden variation in climate.)
