Extractions: Section Two The ideas of the movement also caught on among girls, and they very much wanted to be part of it. However, as children's activities were usually gender exclusive at the time, the idea of girls joining Boy Scouts just wasn't acceptable. Girls had to form their own group, which became known as Girl Guides. Here's an account of how one Girl Guide troop started: "In the early spring of 1910 a company of Scouts was formed at St. James Church in Vancouver. Phyl Munday could not see why boys alone should be able to enjoy such a movement, so she asked the Scoutmaster if they could have a troop of Girl Scouts. Evidently this was not acceptable, so Phyl bullied her mother into becoming their Scout Mistress." Not Just Pin Money, p. 221. Tofino Girl Guides, A-05766 Like Boy Scouts, Girl Guides quickly became popular even in small towns. Although Guides shared similar aims as Scouts, many Guide activities often focused on feminine occupations. While Scouts might earn badges for boating, camping, fitness, and first aid, Guides could work towards badges in cooking, needlework, laundry and child care.

Extractions: Baden-Powell On-Line (An article for the February 1997 Deep Cove Crier) Just a few weeks ago at the local Parkgate Shopping Centre, all of our community was reminded once again that Scouting is alive and well in our local community. Dozens of cars were lined up by the CIBC Bank, depositing not money, but rather Christmas trees in the annual 11th Seymour Tree Chip-Up. I offer my congratulations to the Scouts, Cubs, Beavers, Venturers, Scouters, and parents for a job well done in helping to protect our environment. From its very inception, Scouting has always been looking for creative ways to do good deeds, and serve its local community. I remember as a young boy that I carried a Scouting good-deed coin in my right pocket. The aim was to do a good deed each day so that I could move my Scouting coin over to my left pocket. Lord and Lady Robert and Olave Baden Powell were a remarkably gifted couple to have started such long-lasting and widespread groups as the Scouting and Guiding groups. Guiding in our area involves over 500 girls, including Pathfinders, Guides, Brownies, and Sparks. Just before Christmas, I was invited to speak to a local Brownie group on the meaning of Christmas. To prepare for that session, I used the Internet Search Engines to look for WEB pages on Guiding and Scouting. To my surprise, I discovered that there are over 700 Scouting/Guiding WEB pages around the world, reaching out to the 17 million+ Scouts and 8 million+ Guides. Lord and Lady Baden Powell were trailblazers in everything they did. Similarly, Guides and Scouts are trailblazers in this new technological revolution, that is radically reshaping our modern world.

Extractions: Actually, this section should really be entitled "Females in the BSA." Because before we can talk about BSA's current policy on banning girls from participating in the Cub, Boy, Varsity, and Venture Scouting programs, we need to know how BSA has both treated and viewed women in the Cub Scout program , in the Boy Scout program and viewed girls in the Cub/Boy Scou t programs. To say that women were absent from the Boy Scouts in its formative period is an understatement. Until 1974, there had never been a single woman on BSA's National Board. While some might consider BSA to be hostile to women, it was rather BSA's fear of society's perception of the growing feminization of boys, which caused them to reject woman from leadership roles in Scouting. In 1912, 29% of the Scoutmasters were clergymen (the largest group), while 10% of the Scoutmasters were teachers. BSA did not like the fact that almost 40% of their Scoutmasters were in "non-masculine" professions. They felt that the presence of clergymen and teachers would damage BSA's image of masculinity.

We do not suggest any specific astronomy activities for this age group, other than becoming aware of the sky environment in the daytime and at night. BROWNIES: age 7-9 The program strands are called "windows". These are first opened, then widened. They look at people, the outdoors, and today and tomorrow. In opening and widening the girls' view on the outdoors, astronomy can be introduced: noting and recording the sun and moon in the daytime sky, and noting and recording the moon, planets, and stars in the evening and night sky. Learning to find north, south, east, and west is part of the program. The girls might note that the sun moves from the east in the morning, to the south at noon, to the west in the evening.

Extractions: The Scout and Guide Associations are well known down through the ages for their fellowship and leadership training. Many a well-known public figure has had their beginning in the Scout or Guide movements. If your child is aged between six and eight years old why not start them in the Beavers. They run a very varied programme for the sixteen Beavers currently on the register. The Beavers visit places like the public library, the local Fire Station or have visitors over from Hawkwell British Legion or St. Johns Ambulance. The Cub Scout leader visits them regularly so the Beavers can get to know him before they swim up to the Cubs at eight years old. The Cub Scouts have a steady influx of Beavers and a healthy waiting list; at the moment they have twenty boys on the register. The Cubs have a summer camp once a year and take part in district activities including the cross country and the football competitions. They are lucky within the group that they have a growing number of dedicated leaders, which make scouting as always worthwhile and a pleasure to both the leaders and the cubs themselves, enabling them to do more activities with the boys and aid their development within scouting.

Extractions: Figure 1.British Cub Scouts in the 1990s began accepting girls for the first time. The girls wear the same tradional uniform as the boys, except for skirts rather than trousers. Following the creation of the Bpys' Brigade and Boy Scouts, several uniformed youth organizations were founded for girls. The first was the Girl Guides in England. Some organizations eventually mixed genders. The first here may have been the German Wandervogel. For the most part this did not become a popular approach until after World War II. There are now many mixed groups all over the world. We here at HBU have hoped that someone might create a site on girls' youth group uniforms and that we could coordinate our research efforts. We have found so much material that we can not even handle well the topics we have already addressed. We continued to be interested in finding a partner and would be pleased to assist someone that would be interested in creatung a site on historical girls' uniforms. A HBU reader has done some work on gurl's uniforms. Following the creation of the Bpys' Brigade and Boy Scouts, several uniformed youth organizations were founded for girls. The first was the Girl Guides in England. The junior division of the Guides were the Brownies. The Brownie uniforms was a brown all in one skirt and top with a yellow thin belt and white lacy knee socks and black strap shoes. The English Guides were closely associated with the Scouts. The same was true with several other groups. The Girls' Brigade and the girls' Hitler Youth divsion which were organized along with boys' groups, but the programs were kept separated.
