    Extractions: Despite these differences, most scholars' attempts to explain the Irish encounter with class in America have focused on men's experiences and perspectives. This article contributes to the discussion by clarifying Irish Americans' class standing and by demonstrating that both an appreciation of the complexity of the Irish-American population and attention to specific historical circumstances must inform any analysis of Irish responses to America's class system. I will illustrate the importance of age, generation, and gender, as well as specific context, by focusing on the experiences of young immigrant workers in Chicago in 1880during the pivotal period known as the Gilded Age. CLASS AND OCCUPATIONAL STATUS IN THE LATE NINETEENTH AND EARLY TWENTIETH CENTURIES This exploration must begin by assessing the class "position" of the American Irish. That task alone is a challenge, for the Irish in America were not a monolithic group, and class-based attributes that were common during the famine era were less common by the 1910s. In an effort to provide a basis from which to proceed, I will begin with some general information about both Irish emigration to North America and quantitative measures of Irish immigrants' occupational status in American society.     Extractions: Subj: H-SHGAPE Digest - 8 Apr 1998 to 9 Apr 1998 CAMPBELL@neu.edu Discussion: individuals representing 55 institutions responded to the H-SHGAPE Survey posted in late January, 1998. 51 institutions offered at least one course in the GAPE era. The most common response indicated that the respondent's institution offered a course on that either encompassed the Gilded Age and Progressive Era or focused on the Progressive Era, for undergraduates on a biennial timetable. The vast majority of these courses were taught by a full-time faculty member. More than two-thirds of the respondents also taught the survey of the United States. It is difficult to determine how representative the survey is. H-SHGAPE has around 900 subscribers. One may surmise that one-third are graduate students or individuals affiliated with non-teaching institutions. and that another third are faculty who do not offer courses on the GAPE years. By this calculation the remaining one-third of H-SHGAPE subscribers are faculty that teach the GAPE on occasion. If this reasoning is valid, about 1/6 of H-shgapers who teach the gape responded to the survey. The survey clearly under-represents H-SHGAPE subscribers who are teaching faculty that who do not offer a GAPE course. A positive note in the survey is that the vast majority of GAPE courses are taught by full-time faculty.
