Gibbon Island Gibbons comprise a family of primates commonly called Lesser Apes . These activeprimates live almost exclusively in trees and rarely descend to the ground. http://www.nashvillezoo.org/gibbonisland.htm
Extractions: (click to download player) Hi Med Low ... Low On April 21, 2001 Nashville Zoo opened Gibbon Islands to the public, officially introducing apes to the park. At the time of the opening the exhibit hosted two different species of apes; siamang gibbons and white-handed gibbons. The exhibit is now host to siamang gibbons and white-cheeked gibbons. Considered the crown jewel of the Zoo's Entry Village, Gibbon Islands are two beautifully landscaped hills complete with trees (some as high as 60 feet), shrubs, grass and boulders. The two islands are actually two buildings buried with tons of soil and rock and surrounded by a 4-foot deep moat giving guests an unobstructed view of the primates. Like most primate species, gibbons will not enter the water so the moat will keep the apes in their exhibit. Gibbons comprise a family of primates commonly called "Lesser Apes". These active primates live almost exclusively in trees and rarely descend to the ground. With their arms primarily used for travel, gibbons use their feet to carry food and other objects.

Extractions: Range and habitat Gibbons The largest gibbon is the siamang of Malaysia and Sumatra. In 1979 the Grant Park Zoo in Atlanta, Georgia, reported a four-year-old female siabon, the hybrid offspring of a male silvery gibbon and a female siamang; this was the first known mating involving different primate species. Populations of wild gibbons have been severely reduced due to hunting and deforestation. Scientific classification: Gibbons make up the family Hylobatidae and genus Hylobates. The silvery gibbon is classified as Hylobates moloch, the whitehanded gibbon as Hylobates lar. The siamang is classified as Hylobates syndactylus.

Gibbon Predators And Threats Predators and Threats. Compared to other small primates, gibbons havevery few natural predators and a low predation rate. Leopards http://www.bio.davidson.edu/people/vecase/Behavior/Spring2004/eppolito/predators
Extractions: Predators and Threats Compared to other small primates, gibbons have very few natural predators and a low predation rate. Leopards, pythons, and birds of prey, such as eagles and owls, are their most significant natural threats (Kappeler 1981). Gibbons are able to avoid predation in most cases by remaining in upper levels of the forest. Gibbons are rarely found less than 10 meters above the ground, where the leopards and pythons are most often found ( Kappeler 198 1). Sleeping in the very upper canopies is also a method of avoiding predation, as well as using their camouflaging fur color to their advantage while resting in trees ( Kappeler 1981 During activities such as eating and grooming, gibbons exhibit periods of vigilance, during which they stop their activity and scan the area for potential threats ( Kappeler 1981 ). Following singing and other noisy or obvious behaviors, gibbons will quietly migrate to a new area in order to avoid being found by a predator ( Kappeler 1981

White-handed Gibbon (Hylobates Lar) REPRODUCTION The whitehanded gibbon gives birth to a single offspring. REFERENCESBurton, Frances. 1995. The Multimedia Guide to the Non-human primates. http://members.tripod.com/uakari/hylobates_lar.html
Extractions: This species has relatively long forearms which assist it in suspensory behavior . This species has throat sac located beneath the chin to help enhance the calls. The white-handed gibbon lacks a tail, caudal vertebrae. The average body mass for an adult male white-handed gibbon is around 5.7 kilograms, and for the female it is around 5.3 kilograms. Pelage color for this species ranges from dark brown to beige. The white-handed gibbon is a frugivorous species, but will also consume immature leaves and insects. The white-handed gibbon prefers to consume fruits high in sugar such as the fig ( Ficus ). This an arboreal and a diurnal species. This species sleeps and rests in the emergent trees (Leighton, 1987).
Dr. Maturin's Natural History - Primates to branch, as do smaller primates. They form nuclear families, with the parentsmated for life and the young raised by both parents. Gibbons are omnivorous http://www.hmssurprise.org/NatlHist/Gibbon.html
Extractions: In Post Captain , Captain Aubrey takes temporary command of H.M.S. Lively. On deck for the first time he is taken aback by calls from the rigging, which at first he first mistakes for a boy, but then is told they come from a Java Ape. This is a gibbon - a siamang ( Hylobates syndactylus , aver. wgt. 23 lbs.) one of the species of gibbon and one that is very vocal, like the one on the Lively. Gibbons are lessor apes, distantly related to humans, who are great apes. You can see they are smaller with longer arms, adapted to spend most of their life in the treetops. They brachiate (travel arm over arm swinging from the branches) and do not jump from branch to branch, as do smaller primates. They form nuclear families, with the parents mated for life and the young raised by both parents. Gibbons are omnivorous, eating foods found in the forest canopy: leaves, fruit, seeds, insects, eggs, birds, etc. But the doctor and the Captain also had to content with another ape on the Lively, at least part of one.
Primate Of The Week - White-handed Or Lar Gibbon Singing and the most intense feeding occurs in the morning, but compared tomost other primates, gibbons show little change in activity over the day. http://staff.washington.edu/timk/primate/PrimateWeek/Hlar/
Extractions: Photos by Tim Knight Identification Gibbons are the smallest of the apes. Most species weigh about 5 kg, although Hylobates hoolock weigh slightly more (6 to 8 kg), and the siamang Hylobates syndactylus is twice as large (10 to 12 kg). Gibbons are prototypical brachiators, with long arms and hands and flexible forelimb joints. Scientists are still debating whether these morphological features originally evolved for efficient food collection (i.e. hang-feeding and climbing on small branches; Fleagle 1976) or for efficient travel between food sources (Temerin and Cant 1983). The small size and suspensor locomotion of gibbons permit them to move more easily and directly through the rain forest canopy than sympatric orangutans and macaques (Temerin and Cant 1983; Grand 1984). Geographic Range Gibbons are restricted to tropical evergreen and less seasonal parts of semievergreen rain forests in Asia. H. agilis
