Extractions: German Haus Barn Manning, Iowa 51455 In the 17th and 18th centuries, haus barns (house barns) were a common form of dwelling throughout several areas of Germany, This was especially true in Schleswig-Holstein, a state in the Northwest part of Germany, Many of the Manning area families are descendants of immigrants from that area. As a means of "getting in touch" with our heritage the Manning Heritage Foundation (MHF) began searching for an authentic haus barn in Germany. Two years ago a 300-year-old structure became available near Itzehoe. The owner, Claus Hachmann, needed to remove the structure from his land. Through Dr. Carl Johannson, curator of the Mofsee Open Air Museum, south of Kiel, the MHF was able to locate and seek possession of this building. The Molfsee Museum currently has many examples of German Haus Barns preserved for tourists to view, and luckily for Manning, they already have an example of the style of this barn. They were our advocates to the German government to make it possible for Manning to import this particular building for the purposes of establishing the first German Heritage Museum in the United States. The haus barn is a unique structure that consists of living quarters for not only the family, including bedrooms, sitting, dining and cooking areas, but also areas for housing livestock, farm equipment and feed.

But the impact of the short-lived upheavals of 1848-49 deserves attention because this brief period of unprecedented legal and political permissiveness revealed some of the tensions in mid-century German society that were normally concealed under a blanket of official repression. One striking feature of the revolutionary years was the obvious upsurge for spontaneous association. Large open gatherings ( Volksversammlungen Vereine ) that had been developing since the late 18th century. There were reading, choral, gymnastic and marksmen's clubs, associations for promoting education or business or social welfare every sort of social activity was conducted through a club of some sort, the number of which had increased rapidly in the 1830s and 1840s. Only political clubs were lacking, because they were forbidden under the old regime. But when political activity was legalized in 1848 nearly every locality quickly acquired both a democratic and a liberal club, at least. For a nation immersed in club activities it was the most natural form for a political action to take. The new political clubs acted in a variety of ways. They tried to influence public opinion, and they joined in the almost universal drive for collecting signatures on petitions. (Nearly every organization in Germany seems to have initiated a petition of some sort: The Frankfurt parliament alone got 17,000 of them, many with hundreds or even thousands of signatures.) The political clubs also supported candidates for election, and they formed the core constituency organizations of the slowly emerging national political parties.
