At Keahole Point on the Island of Hawaii, NELHA is considered the world's foremost testing facility for OTEC and OTEC-related activities. Hawaii's location close to the tropical zone provides very high levels of solar radiation (also called insolation). Using this radiation, solar thermal power or PV power can provide Hawaii with several alternative sources of power to replace imported petroleum. About 55,000 households in Hawaii use solar water heaters, making Hawaii the state with the nation's highest per capita installation of these solar devices. An estimated 1,000 or more residential and commercial PV installations are in use throughout the state. Hawaii has some of the best conditions in the world for wind power, and the state was second only to California in commercial wind-energy generation. Wind power in Hawaii now ranks third among its renewable resources that provide electricity to the utility grids. Although most Hawaii wind farms are small compared to Mainland installations, they contributed over 23 million kWh of electricity in 1992.

Here are some of the alternative energy sources along with the bad and good news that comes with each energy source. Geothermal energy is the useful conversion of natural heat from the interior of the Earth to heat buildings and to generate electricity. This type of power is being used presently in Russia, Iceland, and California. It is only considered to be nonrenewable when used at greater extraction rates than natural replenishment. Bad News : The environmental impact of geothermal energy is not as extensive as other sources of energy but it is considerable. Environmental problems include on-site noise, emissions of gas, and disturbance of the land for the site and pipes. As well, the production of energy and electricity from geothermal reservoirs is rather expensive and only applicable in limited areas. Some cultures, Hawaiin for example, are offended by the use of an underground source for energy. Good News : Development of geothermal energy does not require large-scale transportation of raw materials. It does not produce the pollutants that burning fossils fuels does or the problems associated with storing radioactive waste.
