The latter have been conveniently and cheaply available in many countries including the UK, however, these sources are not only dirty but have a limited life. Consequently the logic is to develop alternative sources which are based on renewable energy. Wind Turbines in the Canary Islands Dragon Arum Click on an image to get an enlarged view. Extractions: In this lesson the students examine a renewable power source, geothermal energy. They research places throughout the world where this form of energy is prevalent and map the locations. The students then focus on New Zealand and research how geothermal power is used there. They discover what modifications humans need to make in order to take advantage of geothermal energy. They compare these to modifications that are necessary for other types of electrical power sources, such as coal fired thermal generators, wind power, and solar power. Serving Colorado and the Four Corners since 1996 Energy pioneers in the San Juans foster alternative and reusable energy by Gail Marvel Whether the interest is conservation, efficiency or the environment, the pioneering spirit of the west emerges when you speak of alternative and reusable energy. From high-tech to low-tech, alternative energy innovators are scattered throughout the San Juans. They reshape traditional forms of energy, blend existing concepts and implement new technologies. If youre a hot water hog, and many of us are, switching to solar could be an answer to lowering energy costs. Even if you rely on traditional sources for your other electrical needs, heating hot water with solar energy can return the installation investment in as little as a year, depending on your hot water usage. The easiest part of energy independence is all about conservation and load reduction, explains Dana Orzel, owner of Great Solar Works, Ridgway, Colorado. Solar hot water panels are up to 85 percent efficient, depending on climate conditions. And the climate here in the San Juan Mountains is mostly sunny, with 300 plus sunny days. The thing about solar hot water that really excites me is that it is something any home can use, right now. Orzel has been in the solar electric field since 1988, designing and installing solar systems in homes and businesses in the area. Orzel also designs and installs domestic space heating, including radiant slab heating, another area he feels has experienced great strides in technology and affordability, as well as wind and hydro, electrical systems. Extractions: Eugene, Oregon, October 2000 Oil fuels the modern world. No other substance can equal the enormous impact which the use of oil has had on so many people, so rapidly, in so many ways, and in so many places around the world. Oil in its various refined derivative forms, such as gasoline, kerosene, and diesel fuel, has a unique combination of many desirable and useful characteristics. These include a current availability in abundance, a currently high net energy recovery, a high energy density, ease of transportation and storage, relative safety, and great versatility in end use. Oil is also useful as more than an energy source. It is the basis for the manufacture of petrochemical products including plastics, medicines, paints, and myriad other useful materials. Finally, the asphalt "bottoms" from refineries have converted millions of miles of muddy trails around the world into paved highways on which transport vehicles fueled by oil run. Alternative energy sources must be compared with oil in all these various attributes when their substitution for oil is considered. None appears to completely equal oil.

Extractions: Eugene, Oregon Oil fuels the modern world. It brought great changes to economies and lifestyles in less than 200 years. Nothing else to date can equal the enormous impact which the use of oil has had on so many people, so rapidly, and in so many ways around the world. But oil is a finite resource. The common question "How long will oil be produced?" is the wrong question. The critical question is "When is the date of the maximum daily amount of world oil productionthe peak?" After that oil will be an irreversibly declining resource facing an increasing demand which cannot be met. The world passed its peak of rate of oil discoveries in the 1960s, but there is a lag time from discovery to full production. Although estimates differ slightly, it seems clear that the peak of world oil production will be reached at least by 2020, and possibly within the next decade (Campbell 1997; Campbell & Laherrere 1998; Ivanhoe 1995). One statistic points up the need to think about alternative energy sources; the world now uses about 26 billion barrels of oil a year, and in new field discoveries we are finding less than 5.5 billion barrels annually. The world is going out of the oil business. With the many good things which oil now does for us, what will happen when we no longer have it? What are the possible alternatives to oil? Can any one of them or all combined really fill the gap left by the depletion of oil?

Extractions: Deutsch Investors Press Jobs at EnBW ... Archive Shallow geothermal energy Renewable Energies Heat supply with shallow geothermal energy In Germany, the temperature just below the earth?s surface in shallow depths is about 10 °C all the year round. With the help of heat pumps this near-surface geothermal heat can be used to operate heating and cooling systems, for example. Today, vertical geothermal heat exchangers are generally used to harness shallow geothermal heat. EnBW is supporting the further development of individual system components as well as assisting the development of planning tools to make these systems even more effective in the future. For commercially viable and sustained operation, a geothermal heat exchanger must be optimally dimensioned: if the heat source is too large, initial costs increase and inevitably spell the end when these are compared with alternative energy systems. On the other hand, if the system is too small, this will result in an increasing demand for electricity and operating costs and reduced efficiency. In the worst case it could even cause damage to the plant. Careful planning, therefore, is a basic prerequisite for cost-effective exploitation of near-surface geothermal heat.
