Go to the @ugusta Forums Editor, The Chronicle In reference to T. Williams' July 31 letter, I am the librarian she wrote about concerning the Harry Potter books. Ms. Williams not only misquoted me, but also left out some important facts. The librarian is not the sole person making decisions at the school. Each school has a media committee that plays an active role. In this case, a parent approached me about donating the first book in the Harry Potter series in honor of her son. Knowing there was a lot of controversy over the series, I called a media committee meeting made up of administrators, teachers, a community member and parents.

Extractions: By: Jonathan Hayes Tifton Gazette The Tift County Foundation for Educational Excellence is challenging not only students, but parents, teachers, grandparents and friends with their summer reading program, Points for Books. This summer (June 14-Jul 31), after finishing a book, Tift County residents will have an opportunity to raise book-buying money for their public school of choice by passing a test at the Points for Books media center location at the Tifton-Tift County Public Library. The media center features a computer program, Accelerated Reader, designed to present readers a 20-questions, multiple-choice test. If you pass, you get points. Each point is worth 50 cents. Points are based on the scale of the book, said Mike Brumby, who heads the educational foundation. Point records will be kept at the downtown library and data concerning each schools progress will be released weekly through local radio and newspaper. In 1996, the program was introduced to Charles Spencer; Len Lastinger, Northside and the Junior High.

Home The Media Center at Haworth Elementary School serves all of the children from grades Kindergarten through 8. The library relies heavily on volunteers to help 511 students choose and check out books weekly from a collection of nearly 20,000 books. The Media Center has been the beneficiary of many fine books bought and donated at the annual HHSA Book Fair and through the generosity of Home and School allocations. This past spring, HHSA allocated funds to purchase new holiday books as well as wordless books which will be used in a writing project by sixth grade language arts students. At the Book Fair last fall, over 100 new books were donated by Haworth parents. Many thanks for your generosity. Stop in and visit the Library/ Media Center; parents may also become patrons and borrow books from the collection. Have you been "caught reading" lately?
