    Extractions: The United States Supreme Court handed down its opinion in Brown on May 17, 1954, unanimously ruling that racial segregation in the public schools violates the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution. To say the Court's opinion was unpopular would be an understatement. The Georgia state legislature amended its flag law twenty-one months later to change one confederate flag design, the stars and bars, to another, the so-called confederate battle flag. If the Georgia state legislature did change the design to a symbol of racial segregation to protest the Court's opinion, then the legislature would certainly not been so indiscrete to admit its true reasons on the record. Charles (Kin) Spain , 29 April 1996 Actually, they changed from one Confederate flag to another. The flag before this was based on the First National and was designed by Georgia Confederate veterans in the late 1800's. The legislature added the battle flag of the Army of Northern Virginia in 1956 - NOT, according to the legislative record - to resist school desegregation, but to raise consciousness about the deteriorating battle flags of the state collection. Georgia started one of the first flag conservation movements in the country. The school desegregation proposal came three weeks after the flag law was changed. Even the Atlanta Journal newspaper, in a 1992 investigation of the change, stated that no evidence exists to link the change with racial motives. However, people in this country just prefer to believe mythology (like Washington throwing the silver dollar across the Potomac River) rather than facts - time and time again.

    Extractions: Back to Publications Marist Marching Band Camp at Gordon College Barnesville, GA - There was music in the air at Gordon College last week as the marching Marist War Eagles spent five days here honing their skills. Band director, Mark Craddock, praised the campus, faculty and staff for making the event a productive one for the band members. The Marist School, located in Atlanta, had been unsuccessful in finding an off-campus location for their band camp for several years. Something always seemed to interfere at the last minute and the group was discouraged. “Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville called us in May,” noted Rhonda Toon, “and asked if we could do them a big favor. Marist had talked to them about band camp, but due to scheduling problems, they were not able to accommodate them. Dr. Weill approved our opening the campus to the school, and this past week they finally had their band camp.” Over sixty band members and instructors arrived in Barnesville last Wednesday. Gordon faculty member, Gary Cox, is a Marist alumnus and he welcomed the group soon after they assembled in the student center auditorium. “You look a lot different than the Marist students I remember,” he said. The Marist School traces its roots to 1901 when Marist College opened its doors on Ivy Street in Atlanta. For seventy-five years the school only accepted boys and they were required to participate in compulsory military training. The school relocated to Ashford Dunwoody Road in 1962. Cox graduated from the school in 1967 when it was still a military school.

FAQ G eorgia Military College was created in 1879 by act of the Georgia General Assembly "to educate young men and women from the Middle Georgia area in an environment which fosters the qualities of good citizenship." It was the apparent intention of the General Assembly to establish the school as a unit of the slowly forming University System. State property in Milledgeville was loaned to the University of Georgia by the Act of 1879, and the Board of Trustees of the University of Georgia was given veto powers by this Act over the acts of the local Board of Trustees of the new institution. The school was originally called Middle Georgia Military and Agricultural College and was ceded state government lands surrounding the Old Capitol Building, the seat of government for the State of Georgia from 1807-1868. The Old Capitol Building, then as now, is the main college facility and sits on the highest point in Milledgeville. The College was founded in an era when what we now consider public education throughout the South was practically non-existent. It was apparently the intention of the legislature to take some steps to correct this lack of educational opportunity. The word College as applied to the institution was, perhaps, not quite accurate. The school would begin as what would now be termed a high school; however, its curriculum, including as it did subjects far beyond the scope of the high schools of today, made it possible for GMC graduates to enroll with advanced standing into the University of Georgia and other institutions of higher learning. The General Assembly intended the new school to offer preparatory instruction that would enable graduates to enter higher classes at the University of Georgia, to give training in agriculture and mining, and, finally, to train teachers.
