It is estimated that by the year 2000, people over 65 will make up 20% of our population. People of any age are healthier if they are well-nourished. Well-nourished older people feel better, recover faster from illnesses, spend less time in the hospital, and can possibly live independently longer than older people who don't eat well. But it's not always easy to eat well. As you age you may lose some of your ability to taste, smell, and see. You may have greater difficulty in preparing food due to illness, arthritis or loss of sight. You may lose teeth, making it difficult to chew. Or you may not have enough money to buy the food you need.

Extractions: Mr. Chairman and distinguished members of the Committee, I'm pleased to be associated once again with this important committee. During eighteen years as a Senator from South Dakota, I served every day as a member of this Committee: That was one of the deep satisfactions of my life. I also enjoyed my service on the Foreign Relations Committee, the Joint Economic Committee and my Chairmanship of the Select Committee on Nutrition and Human Needs. But Agriculture was my bread and butter committee. This morning I'm especially pleased to be accompanied by my friend and longtime Senate colleague, Bob Dole. As you know, Bob and I represent opposing parties. But we formed a bipartisan coalition in the Senate on matters relating to food and agriculture. That coalition reformed the field of nutrition and virtually put an end to hunger in America. We reformed and expanded food stamps for the poor; we improved and expanded the school lunch and breakfast programs; we launched the WIC program for pregnant and nursing low-income women and their infants. In the 1980's and 1990's there has been some slippage in the coverage of these excellent programs and that needs to be corrected. It is embarrassing that in this richest of all nations we still have an estimated 31 million Americans who do not have enough to eat.

Extractions: What Is Georgias Traditional Industries Program? Georgias traditional industries pulp and paper; food processing; and apparel, carpet, and textiles have historically been the backbone of the states industrial base. Virtually every county in Georgia is home to at least one of these industries, which combined employ 260,000 Georgians, almost half of the states manufacturing work force. Despite their size, these leading industries in Georgia face serious international challenges to their competitive position, especially from companies in low-wage regions of the world. Recognizing the importance of these industries to Georgia, Governor Zell Miller and the General Assembly established the Traditional Industries Program (TIP) in 1994. TIP is designed to bring industry leaders and university-based researchers together to develop and implement practical solutions to improve the competitiveness of pulp and paper; food processing; and apparel, carpet, and textile companies in Georgia. Each of the three traditional industries has formed a public-private partnership where industry identifies critical competitiveness problems, then works closely with faculty from Georgias colleges and universities to solve those problems. Since 1994, the state has invested over $25 million to provide research, technology development, and technical assistance to Georgias traditional industries, and industry has matched the states investment.

Extractions: Sandy Procter says a farmers market is a place for healthy foods and healthy families. "Im not saying that there will never be room for a Twinkie or a donut, but help your child understand that these sometimes foods are exceptions to the rule, [which is that] crisp, juicy fruits and vegetables are excellent snack foods." Procter said markets provide an opportunity for parents to teach their kids how to choose ripe, tasty foods. She said asking childrens opinion about food choices reinforces the food lesson and lets them know their opinions matter. In addition, Procter said studies show that children involved in shopping for and selecting foods are more likely to accept and eat those foods. Emily Mark, a K-State Research and Extension family and consumer sciences specialist, said parents can even let their children spend their own money to buy something at the market "They learn how to select the tomato and what is a quality tomato, but they also learn to budget their money," Mark said.
