It's not surprising ATLANTA METRO won the competition for the 1996 Summer Olympic Games . The city has a track record for accepting tough challenges and prevailing by sheer enthusiasm. At the end of the Civil War, when Atlanta had been destroyed by fire, her citizens chose to rebuild, though nearly everything they owned lay in ashes. In the early 1960's, a resurgent Atlanta invested in a modern airport, the biggest air traffic hub in the Southeast, then built an even larger one in 1980. With the huge Atlanta International Airport , the city became one of the largest air transportation centers in the world and one of the top convention and tourism sites in North America. Optimism seized Atlantans in 1965, when they constructed a giant baseball stadium a year before enticing a team away from Milwaukee. Then they cheered through 25 seasons, dreaming of a National League Championship. Who will ever forget the Atlanta Braves performances in the '91 and '92 World Series and '91, '92 and '93 National League Pennant thrillers?

Fitzgerald The Defense Personnel Support Center (DPSC) in Philadelphia, PA, is the largest inventory control point in the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA). The DPSC dates to the 1800s when it was known as the Schuylkill Arsenal. At that time it served as a warehouse and distribution hub for supplies, ammunition and handmade uniforms for the US Army. Early history of the arsenal covers a wide variety of experiences. One of the arsenal's first and most interesting endeavors was the preparation for the Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1803. Captain Meriweather Lewis assembled a unique collection of mathematical instruments, weapons, medicine, clothing and gifts valued at $2,160.14 in the arsenal's warehouses for his expedition. The Schuylkill Arsenal also responded to national tragedies. In 1875 the arsenal issued clothing and bedding to people left destitute on the western frontier because their crops had been destroyed by hordes of grasshoppers. Four years later the arsenal sent 1,000 tents to Tennessee, Mississippi and Louisiana for yellow fever victims. During the Spanish-American War, over half of the uniforms were supplied by the arsenal. In 1941, just as the United States was becoming involved in World War II, the arsenal experienced tremendous expansion. Additions included new warehouses, a clothing factory and the current headquarters building. The arsenal, renamed the Defense Personnel Support Center, assumed its present form in 1965 when the Defense Subsistence Supply Center of Chicago and the Defense Medical Supply Center of Brooklyn, NY, consolidated with the Clothing and Textiles Supply Center of Philadelphia.

Extractions: Doug Scott followed by David Truer 3 and 4pm, Sunday April 25th The Wilderness Act was established in 1964 when Congress decided that wilderness areas in the United States needed protection. The Wilderness Act set a process by which Congress can designate land as wilderness, including roadless areas or wild places supported by grassroots campaigns. This law led to the designation of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in Minnesota, and identified other roadless areas in Superior National Forest. Conservation groups, including the Sierra Club, decided to push for a national law to protect wilderness in the 1950s. Through eight long years of debate, they fought in Congress to pass a bill. President John Kennedy supported it, and President Lyndon Johnson signed the Wilderness Act into law on September 3, 1964. At this spring's Midwest Mountaineering Expo, The Sierra Club has helped us by bringing a speaker who has been one of the key people establishing wilderness protections in Washington, DC. Doug Scott has been advocating for wilderness for nearly forty years. Since 1964, Doug has been working to add wilderness areas to the officially designated system. Currently he is Policy Director for the Campaign for America's Wilderness in Seattle. Doug will talk about the history of the Wilderness Act, and tell stories from forty years of wilderness protection.

Extractions: Agland's Newsletter 2002 Agland Investment Services Newsletter Dear Clients and Friends, The start of a new year gives one pause to look back, although this will be a brief pause, as we are moving quickly into 2003 with a full house of new projects to implement and proposals in preparation. Many have asked, "Where is the Agland newsletter?" as we skipped our 2001 issue. A lot of exciting things have happened since 2000; we encourage you to read on. As you know, Agland has been involved in many economic development projects, and we are often asked, "What do foreign aid and economic development projects accomplish?" To answer this question, examples are useful. Aggressive military action in Afghanistan in 2001 at a cost of $7-8 billion (and many lives) provided a good example of what can happen when a war torn country is abandoned and a power vacuum is created. If $1 billion had been spent over 2 or 3 years on a broad economic development program, it is likely that a war would have not been required. We firmly believe that well-spent foreign aid saves our country money over time and can do much to encourage peace and stability in the world. We all witnessed the excesses of the dot-com world. One of the bigger busts was in the food industry with the demise of Wine.com, once the largest Internet retailer, ending with an auction of a million-bottle inventory at distressed prices. After $200 million in venture capital investment, the company ended with $3 million in assets and $25 million in liabilities. Of course this is "small potatoes" compared to the collapse of the home grocery delivery start-up, Webvan. One has to wonder just how, as a manager, you do this in a relatively short period of time. Reality is often painful.

Extractions: Washington, D.C. 20515 Dear Mr. Chairman: I am pleased to provide the enclosed report, Foods Sold in Competition with USDA School Meal Programs . This report fulfills the request in the House Appropriations Committee Report (House Report 106-619) which accompanied the Agriculture Appropriations Act for fiscal year 2001. It directed the Department to prepare a report reviewing the effect that competitive foods may have on the school meal programs, including information on statutory limits or judicial rulings that may restrict the ability of the Department to regulate these competitive foods. This report makes it clear that the availability of foods sold in competition with school meals jeopardizes the nutritional effectiveness of the programs and may be a contributor to the trend of unhealthy eating practices among children and subsequent health risks. The consumption of competitive foods is of special concern to those who support the school meal programs since children who purchase these foods are less likely to eat a reimbursable school meal. This undermines the ability of the school meal programs to contribute to childrens health, well-being and academic achievement. The report includes the positions and/or actions of several professional nutrition and health organizations, national education organizations and government agencies that have expressed concern about the prevalence of competitive foods in schools. Included in the report are the Departments recent initiatives to develop healthy school nutrition environments to reinforce nutrition education messages for children, their families and the community at large. The report also outlines the statutory and regulatory requirements related to competitive foods, and describes significant judicial action which limit the ability of the Department to regulate the sale of these competitive foods. The report concludes with possible Congressional actions that would strengthen the ability of the Department, the States and local schools to develop meaningful competitive foods policies.

Extractions: Academics Cooperative Extension Agricultural Research Faculty/Staff ... Other Resources A project best suited for the dedicated gardener In the Central Georgia area, late spring frost can reduce yields significantly so bunch grapes should be planted on elevated sites. In all areas, low spots where cold air settles should be avoided. The site should be in full sun most or all of the day. American bunch grapes have been grown in home planting in Georgia since the states were first settled. Growing bunch grapes at home can be both fun and rewarding. Successful growing demands timely work. A good site, proper variety selection, carrying out a season-long spray program, pruning and fertilization are keys to success. Bunch grapes require close care and attention, therefore, only the dedicated gardener who is willing to carry out a season-long pest control program should grow them. Well-drained, loam or clay loam soils are best. Bunch grapes also grow well on heavier clay soils, however, excessive vine growth and delayed maturity may result. Avoid extremely sandy soils if possible and areas where water stands after heavy rains.

Handy's drop-ship program includes an on-line program called "Web Warehouse". Your orders are transmitted automatically to the appropriate vendor, and processed just as any other order. Handy is also currently in the planning stages of developing a program to allow consumers to place orders through your web site from a central, on-line store. Pool Buying Program Members have the option of buying on Handy's pool buying program at Handy's lowest negotiated landed net cost to the warehouse. Pools provide the dealer with a selection of merchandise not normally stocked in the warehouse, but available through the warehouse on a "cross-dock" basis - that is, we gather orders together from a number of different members during a set period of time, then place one order with the factory for delivery to the warehouse. Product is then delivered freight-free with your regular order. Look for pool promotions at the Handy markets, and at various other times throughout the year.
