Extractions: News Govt Aff Calendar People ... 99-2000 Sessions Current News from GAEL and GSSA Education Reform - Georgia Style Date Reported: 12/05/1999 During the past six months, the Governor's Education Reform Study Commission and the Governor's education policy team have been working busily to develop proposals that can be embraced in education reform legislation which will provide the framework for significantly improving student academic performance and which will improve schools and schooling in general in the State of Georgia. The full Commission last met on November 15 to report on the issues which they have been addressing and to propose a variety of alternatives for dealing with those issues. In addressing the GSBA/GSSA Annual Conference the Governor gave indications of the some the proposals he is considering. The final meeting of the Commission for 1999 is scheduled for December 16 at the Renaissance Waverly Hotel ostensibly for the purpose of hearing the Governor's response to the work of the Commission. Over the next several days we will review some of the products of the commission's work and some of the statements that have been made by the Governor which may give some insight into what will be proposed by the Governor for consideration by the General Assembly when it convenes in January. In this first article, we revisit the words of the Governor at the first meeting of the Commission.

May 26, 2000 Discover Card is awarding over one million dollars in scholarships to high school juniors as part of the Discover Card Tribute Award Scholarship program this year. Given in cooperation with the American Association of School Administrators (AASA), scholarships are awarded to high school juniors that have reached beyond academic achievement. These high school juniors, selected from a pool of nearly 7,500 applicants, are recognized for excelling in areas beyond scholastics. While students must maintain a minimum 2.75 cumulative grade point average to qualify, they must also demonstrate accomplishments in four of five areas: special talents, leadership, obstacles overcome, unique endeavors, and community service.

SW, Cave Spring, Georgia 30124 The Georgia School for the Deaf, located in Cave Spring, Georgia, is a state operated residential school for students with a hearing impairment. It is open to legal residents of Georgia. Day school admission is available to students ages 3 to 21. Eligible students must have a measured audiometric heading loss of 55 dB or greater in the better ear. Its support services include Equine Therapy, Psychological/Psychiatric Testing and Follow-Up, Education/Developmental Diagnosis, Language/Communication Evaluation, Speech/Speechreading, Physical/Occupational Therapy, Augmentative Communication, Hearing/Vision Screening, and Social/Emotional Support. Its communication philosophy is that GSD recognizes the need of all disabled individuals to live in an accessible environment for deaf/hard-of-hearing children and adults including the elimination of barriers to communication.

The Area Agency on Aging has an advisory council, comprised primarily of older persons, to review and comment on all programs affecting the elderly. Our role as the Area Agency on Aging is to plan, coordinate, and advocate for the development of a comprehensive service delivery system to meet the short and long term needs of person sixty years of age or older in the Heart of Georgia Altamaha Area. We accomplish this by working with federal, state, and local officials; elderly constituents; service providers; and the private voluntary sector to coordinate existing services and to develop new services. The Area Agency on Aging identifies the needs of the elderly and creates plans for meeting those needs through a system of in-home and community-based services which enable our customers to maintain their independence and dignity.
