Special Needs: Domestic Abuse, AIDS, the Disabled, the Elderly, the Homeless Numerous courts and bars have developed programs for groups with special needs. Advocacy for these groups is crucial as their needs are often exacerbated by lower income, thus further limiting their access to justice in the areas of employment, housing, etc. Fifty-seven courts or bar associations indicated in their 2001 survey responses that they support activities addressing special needs. Among the many programs are the following: "He Loves Me Not," the Arkansas Bar Association video on the prevention of dating violence, was distributed to all high schools in the state. The state public television affiliate aired three, one-hour TV call-in programs, using the video in its entirety as a centerpiece. Press Release August 1 WICHITA, Kan. - Careers for Georgians with disabilities and special needs. That was the focus July 15 at the EDS offices where keynote speaker the Honorable Johnny Isakson, EDS representatives and members of the Cerebral Palsy Research Foundation of Kansas gathered to dedicate the Atlanta School of Adaptive Computer Training (SACT: www.cprf.org/training.asp The opening of the Atlanta SACT begins an era of completely adaptive IT training for Georgians in the area's first computer training school focused on matching a student's abilities and the right assistive technology for career success. The Honorable Johnny Isakson, U.S. House of Representatives, Georgia's Sixth District and member of the U.S. Education and Workforce Committee, commemorated the event and spoke "from the heart" on the issue of opening the doors of opportunity for people with disabilities. Congressman Isakson further supported the school's mission and underlined the need for all communities to reach out to the disabled community through the wonders of today's technology. A personal testimony of the potential of the Atlanta SACT was shared by Michael Taylor, a 2000 Wichita SACT graduate turned instructor. In 1994, Taylor was struck with a catastrophic illness called acute central vestibular neuronittus. The result was permanent damage to the nerve that carries signals from his eye to his brain. "After the final diagnosis, I was told that I would probably never be able to do any gainful work... and simply walking would be a challenge due to the extreme symptoms of dizziness and physical disorientation," related Taylor during the Atlanta SACT dedication. "In the following 18 months, I went through intense physical therapy and one operation in an effort to improve my condition - with little success."

Extractions: Since I moved here to Georgia a year ago, I began a search to find appropriate Christian educational classes for my nine-year-old son who has high functioning autism. I had planned to go through my original church here which was the Catholic church. However, if you have read an older review that I had written many months ago, I found out that the new Catholic church here was not nearly as supportive as my other one was in Louisiana so I began a search to find a church which would assist me in this endeavor. (http://imzadi.epinions.com/kifm-review-510C-1628D204-390397B7-prod5) This would require me leaving the Catholic Church, but since my oldest son was Confirmed this Easter and the church didn't seem interested in educating my youngest son, I started to look for other denominations in my local area. This proved to be a challenge because at first the nearest church that had services for disabled children was at least 30 minutes away and there would be no one from my local area for my oldest son to relate to. However, I am pleased to tell you that I found a wonderful church here that is about 20 minutes north of here, in a neighboring school district where not only are there children from the area of my youngest son's school attending, but my oldest one as well. This new church is Hebron Baptist Church in Dacula, Georgia, but what I love about Hebron is that they don't broadcast themselves as "Baptist". They just tell people that they are from Hebron Church which is really great to me!

Extractions: 21st Century Technology for Students with Special Needs In this new revolution, digital age technologies are transforming all of our lives by providing revolutionary ways to learn, communicate and work. But for individuals with special needs, the digital age can provide something even more valuablefreedom. "The Internet is an empowering tool for students with disabilities," says John Williams, the Assistive Technologies columnist for BusinessWeek.coms online magazine. "The Internet gives them immediate access to information that historically has been unavailable to them. Online education is a major boon for students with disabilities, especially for students who have a difficult time traveling. As the Internet becomes more and more accessible to all people, I believe you will see more students with disabilities take advantage of this educational tool." According to Carol Hughes, Parent Advocate for Georgia Techs Center for Rehabilitation Technology, "When youre on the Internet, in a chat room or taking an online class, your disability is invisible and irrelevant. Youre on equal footing. Telecommuting, which is becoming more and more popular, is also a great benefit to people with disabilities because there are no transportation issues or architectural access limitations."

Extractions: by Marina Bulia Isolation and a sense of powerlessness face disabled people everywhere. In the former Soviet Union, the problem is magnified by the fact that society has traditionally ostracized those with disabilities and the institutions set up to serve them receive virtually no financial support. A number of NGOs, however, are trying to remedy the situation, offering the disabled new ways to play an active role in society. The House of Social Therapy, in Tbilisi, Georgia, serves young people and adults in need of special care. Founded in 1990, the NGO engages disabled young people in a wide variety of work and social activities that allow them to participate with others in interesting and productive ways. Among the many pursuits offered are weaving, cooking, candlemaking, publishing, gardening and housekeeping, as well as painting, drawing, modeling, speech work, drama and music. Through these activities, young people can connect with society through fun and useful work, often in ways that surprise parents who were unable to draw out their children when they were isolated at home. Georgia's huge social and economic crisis made opening a day home for the disabled very difficult. But because the day home meant so much to its members, the young people themselves were sometimes able to help the group solve the problems it faced. For example, the minibus used to pick up and drop off day home clients broke down in 1992. It was not easy to repair because of the difficulty of finding spare parts and the high cost of labor. Sophia, a child suffering from Down's Syndrome, was so upset that she could not get to the center, she told her father, "I don't want to sit at home. I want to go to my place of work. You must help!" Sophia's father loaned the home his own minibus until the one belonging to the center could be fixed.
