Extractions: The Latvian government does not intend to abolish its decision to transfer Russian high and vocational schools to the Lettish language of teaching from Sept. 1, 2004, Latvian Education and Science Minister Karlis Sadurskis said Wednesday after meeting the members of the parliament's education and culture commission. Only 10% of the Russian schools and schools of other ethnic minorities are ready for reform. According to the data of the state inspection, out of 49 checked schools only 16 are fully ready for changes, 6 are partly ready, while 15 hope to be ready by Sept. 2004; 12 schools won't have enough time to get ready for reform. Latvia has 158 schools for ethnic minorities, where about 40% of children of school age study. The majority of the pupils' parents are against this transfer. They believe this will lead to an inferior quality of education, as the teachers, due to imperfect knowledge of the language, will fail to set out and explain the subject in an easy-to-understand way; pupils will have problems with perception and the learning of terminology, while the parents can't help their children as most of them do not have sufficient knowledge of the Lettish.

Extractions: Measles has not been endemic in the United States since 1997, although limited outbreaks continue to be caused by imported* cases ( ). In 2003, CDC assisted in investigating the largest school outbreak of measles in the United States since 1998 ( ). The outbreak consisted of 11 laboratory-confirmed cases: nine cases in a boarding school in eastern Pennsylvania and two epidemiologically linked cases in New York City (NYC). This report summarizes the results of the outbreak investigation, which indicated that measles continues to be imported into the United States and that high coverage with 2 doses of measles-containing vaccine (MCV) among students was effective in limiting the size of the outbreak. Health-care providers should maintain a high index of suspicion for measles, especially in those who have traveled abroad recently, and recommendations for 2 doses of MCV in all school-aged children should be followed. In April 2003, the Pennsylvania Department of Health reported to CDC two cases of measles in unvaccinated twins aged 13 years in a boarding school with 663 students. Active surveillance for measles was conducted in the school, hospitals, and doctors' offices through May 2003. Patients were interviewed, acute- and convalescent-phase sera were collected for measles IgM enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay testing, and throat swabs and urine samples were collected for viral genotyping. Efforts to control the outbreak included vaccinating or excluding from campus and isolating all students and staff members with no evidence of immunity to measles

Prepare for college in an exceptional academic and family-like boarding environment. Experience it all. Darlington School, an independent, coeducational, college preparatory school, serves high school-aged boarders and day students in pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade. For nearly a century, students from Rome, neighboring towns in Georgia, and an average of 16 states and international students from an average of 18 countries, have joined the Darlington "family" each year. Why? There are obvious reasons: Darlington's proven track record in preparing students well for college, its serenely beautiful, 500-acre campus, its impressive facilities and wide array of academic, artistic, athletic, and social opportunities. But more significant are the friendly spirit of the School and its long history of inspiring students to take full advantage of their God-given gifts and to grow intellectually, spiritually, morally, physically, culturally, and socially.

Events Archive january 15, nEW york times article about TELAVI BOARDING HOUSE AND SCHOOL FOR ORPHANS AND ABANDONED CHILDREN Finally, a few months ago, when the cracked walls of the dormitory seemed about to burst, a foreign aid group hired someone to put metal bands around the building to hold it together. In the small, unheated rooms inside, there is a wool blanket on each of the wood cots, but no one has found the money to buy pillows. ''Everything is a problem for us,'' said an administrator here at the Telavi Boarding House and School for Orphans and Abandoned Children. ''When a window breaks, we don't know how to replace it.'' One of the children, Madona Pitskhelauri, 13, said that what she likes best is to watch television on the school's one set, but this is not very often because it costs too much to run the generator. Georgia is a country where cities are often dark at night because there is no electricity, where the winter air is sweet with wood smoke because there is no gas for heat, where low-paid teachers sell books at the roadside to earn a living.

If you have never attended a Georgia Tech Ice Hockey game, you are missing out on a lot of excitement. Too bad you will have to wait until next year to catch another game. The GT Club Ice Hockey team wrapped up their 2000-2001 season on March 3 by placing third in the National Division III Hockey Tournament. They ended their season with a record of 26-6-0, placing them first in the nation after the regular season, a repeat of their performance last year. Two of Tech's key players, defenseman Jamie Ledyard and forward Shawn Montague, were named to the first team all-tournament. Only six players from the eight teams in the tournament were chosen to comprise this all-star team. "After the national tournament, the coaches vote on the best players of the tournament," Jamie said. "There is a first team all-tournament and a second team all-tournament."

There are academy alumni in almost every state of the U.S. If my schedule would permit, l could be on the road every week, visiting with people and sharing current academy news with them as they share their academy stories with me. If there are any alumni who do not have some great stories about their academy days, I haven't met them yet. Every one I have met loves the school and is grateful for the experiences the academy offered. On a very enjoyable and memorable recent trip to the Atlanta, Georgia, area, I talked with four very different graduates. Their school days span the 1930's, 1940's and 1950's. Although their stories were different, their love for the school and the relationships they spoke of reflect a consistent theme.

The mental approach to baseball is the key to success for any age. Myself as well as my staff have played pro ball for more than 6 years and success is not determined on the field, it's how the game is played and understood. Instruction involves three things: believing turns into confidence, confidence turns into success, which turns into results.

The schools named in the suit include St. Francis Mission school on the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation, St. Paul's in Marty, the headquarters of the Yankton Sioux Tribe, and Holy Rosary on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, all of which educated Sioux children in South Dakota. The suits were filed by five Sioux who claim they were abused at the schools, and there may be thousands of other students who could join the suit. The plaintiffs allege various forms of abuse by the priests and nuns, including beatings and sexual abuse while attending the boarding schools as a federal program to induce Indians to assimilate into white society.
