Description This model requires that teacher candidates complete an intensive preparation program of approximately four weeks during the summer prior to entering the classroom in the fall. Additionally, it requires intensive monitoring, supervision and mentoring during a two-year induction period. (The model could be adjusted to accommodate teachers hired on provisional status after the school year has begun. In this model, the time required for pre-assignment training will be shortened with training classes held after school hours.) The collaborative unit including the teacher preparation unit of a college or university, a RESA, and the cooperating public schools will be responsible for implementing the program and for recommending candidates for initial certification. Program Components and Description Components: Candidate Selection Criteria Pre-Assignment Instruction Induction Post-Assignment The first phase will consist of approximately 140 clock hours of classroom instruction in pedagogical skills that are integrated with the teaching content field. As an example, instruction will focus on curriculum planning and strategies for teaching science, math, etc. Field experiences will be integrated into the preparation training. Classroom observations of experienced teachers providing instructional assistance to individual students, and mini-lesson presentations during the summer "pre-assignment institute," will be required by placing and supervising candidates in summer school situations.

Throughout the United States, public school alternative education programs vary, depending on individual program objectives, goals and scope of program implementation. These pages were assembled as a research tool for policymakers interested in learning more about alternative education policy, programs and students. National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) Requires Adobe's Acrobat Reader "The 2001 'District Survey of Alternative Schools and Programs,' conducted NCES through its Fast Response Survey System (FRSS), is the first national study of public alternative schools and programs to provide data on topics related to the availability of public alternative schools and programs, enrollment, staffing, and services. The focus of the study is on alternative schools and programs that serve students who are at risk of educational failure, as indicated by poor grades, truancy, disruptive behavior, suspension, pregnancy, or similar factors associated with early withdrawal from school. The study presents a snapshot of alternative schools and programs for at-risk students during the 2000-01 school year."

Extractions: Urban Alternative Preparation Program GTAPP candidates begin their professional induction as interns in K-5 urban classrooms. The challenges of the urban classroom serve as the curriculum for interactive evening and Saturday college seminars taught by university faculty and school system staff. University and school-based mentors work closely with each candidate to ensure instructional improvement. As a result, candidates are able to create effective learning contexts for all children and impact candidate learning, growth, and development. Successful candidates earn initial certification at the end of the first year of coursework. The Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (INTASC) provides the framework for the initial certification. Professional induction continues in the second year for candidates seeking an advanced degree (M.Ed.). Year II Program of Study focuses on refining instructional skills especially in the teaching of reading and mathematics. Support from successful urban teachers and content experts will enable the novice teacher to develop his/her professional potential and gain satisfaction from his/her new rewarding career. The NBPTS provides the framework for the program.
