The idea here is to offer you some interesting mathematics if you have an ulterior motive for being in the Boston area during July and the beginning of August. In particular, the tutorials will run for six weeks meeting twice per week in the evenings (so as not to interfere with day time jobs). Three of the four will start roughly at the beginning of July and run to mid August. The fourth will start in the middle of June and run to the end of July. The precise starting dates and meeting times will be arranged for the convenience of the participants once the tutorial rosters are set. The format will be much like that of the term time tutorials, with the tutorial leader lecturing in the first few meetings and students lecturing later on. Here, I should say that these tutorials have no official Harvard status, so you won't receive either Harvard or concentration credit for them. Moreover, enrollment in the tutorial does not qualify you for any Harvard related perks (such as a place to live). However, the Math Department will pay each student participant a stipend of $700 and you can hand in your final paper from the tutorial for you junior 5-page paper requirement.

Part1: Modeler I decided to use subpatches for my hair- strands, due to the fact that they require less geometry for the definition of the shapes an thus are easier to handle. The use of normal polygons might be more efficient, which would help decrease rendertimes, but would certainly increase the amount of work needed. Modeler with the head of my still hairless "Cornelia" in a background- layer (active layer 2): Create a flat box with 7 segments in y- direction: Create a UV- map with the following settings: The result is a UV- map that is nicely laid out on the UV-grid: Now go into subpatch- mode [TAB] and use the drag- tool to modify the geometry to look similar to this: Now copy these strands into a new layer and move them down and in a bit. This will become the layer of hair closest to the head. In the best of cases this hair- layer neither cuts through the hair- layer above, nor through the head (this should be avoided at all cost). Again it may only stick into the head at the roots.

First as a warning I'm doing this for fun and experimentation. I you have a need (and a budget) for a professionnal application of the techniques described here you might check cyslice software by headus Some time ago I presented a shading network to recover and use the normals of a high detail mesh on a low detail one. I reused the principles to write a plugin that can get displacement info as well as normal / bump info, and that manages to be about 100 times (really!) faster thanks to using Maya's raytracing API calls. rayBake using Tristan Salome's scanCookNode , and is a great tool to bake raytraced shading nodes to image maps : As an alternative not using rayBake, you can check the Mental Ray version of that shader I wrote, and see how the process described in detail here can be ported to Mental Ray for Maya in that tutorial : Also it's a good idea to check in case I did a newer version of rayDisplace.mll

The Mental Ray shader described here is a port of a custom shading node plugin I wrote for Maya's API described here : . It uses the same parameters and works roughly the same way the original node did. Also it's a good idea to check in case I did a newer version of the rayDisplace.dll . For manjor releases I'll try to update this main page, but for minor modifications and bug fixes I probably won't have enough time so I'll just mention them here (beside posting them on rayDisplaceMental workarounds page. General idea : given a high detail and low detail version of a polygonal mesh, I'm using this plugin to generate a displacement map and a normal map that once applied to the low detail mesh will give it a rendered appearance as close as possible to the high detail render. Applications : from a heavy, detailed object (like the one you would get from 3D scanning or the use of Zbrush great detailing tools) you can derive a custom built, animation friendly, low resolution object and the displacement and normal maps that will make it quite identical to the high detail version at render times.
