You had all this organic material buried under the sand and mud. As the pressure increased, the petroleum was driven into nearby rocks. Now a rock may look solid but actually it has many pores in. Some rocks have more pores and bigger pores than others. There are three basic kinds of rock: igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary. Petroleum is usually found around sedimentary rocks . [These were formed by the same laying down of sand and silt and mud that was helping to make petroleum.] However, not all sedimentary rocks contain petroleum. In fact, the odds of me becoming a drop of heavy oil were pretty slim. Only about 2 % of organic material ever becomes petroleum and only about 0.5% accumulates in sufficient quantities to be recoverable. The secret to this happening is that hydrocarbons are lighter than water. As an experiment, put a drop of oil in a pan of water. You will see it migrate O.K. Course Philosophy and Requirements: This course challenges you to apply the principles and knowledge of Physical Geology (Physical Geology is required pre-requsite) to the long and varied history of our planet. The evidence of past geologic events can be observed in rock structures, textures, composition, and fossils of the crust. As geologists, we search the Earth's surface, drill into it, analyze its chemistry and physical properties, and do whatever else we can to gather together pieces of this cryptic puzzle of events. In this class, you will learn not only about earth history, but how we go about piecing together the puzzle of the earth and its history. The Department of Geology feels strongly that this course should stress geologic concepts and reasoning processes, rather than rote memorization. You will need to memorize many things: the geologic time scale, major groups of plants and animals, and the ages of many extremely important events in earth history. Our goal, however, is to teach you to ask questions about the earth's history, and to gather the tools with which those questions can be answered. At the beginning of each lecture I will present the objectives for the day, often as questions that we are trying to solve, and you will find that your answers to those questions will be a very effective way to study for exams.     Extractions: Prior to one billion years ago, the geologic history of West Virginia is obscure. Sometime between about 1,100 and 800 million years ago, lava was deposited in the extreme eastern part of the State forming our oldest exposed rock, the Catoctin Greenstone. Later, perhaps about 800 million years ago, a narrow trough began to form in extreme eastern West Virginia. An arm of the sea entered and sediments accumulated. As time went on, this shallow sea transgressed westward. By the end of Cambrian time, about 300 million years later, this shallow sea covered essentially all of West Virginia. Marine deposition took place throughout most of this and the succeeding Ordovician Period. During this total interval of about 370 million years, most of the rocks exposed in Jefferson and eastern Berkeley counties and in scattered areas southwestward along the Virginia boundary were deposited. Rocks of the same age are found in abundance in the deep wells throughout the State. The Taconic Orogeny near the end of Ordovician time formed a high mountainous area east of West Virginia. These highlands formed the main source of sediments for the succeeding Silurian Period and part of the Devonian Period. Both clastics and carbonates were deposited in a mixed marine and nonmarine environment, with clastics predominating in the eastern part of the State. Evaporites were deposited in northern West Virginia in Late Silurian time.
