GEOLOGY Topics covered: The scientific study of the Earth- its composition and the processes that operate on and beneath its surface. This course covers basic mineral/rock formation, earthquakes, volcanoes, landslides, stream processes, groundwater, glacial, desert and coastal processes; basic geological time principles, mineral and energy resources, the Earth's deep interior, and the theory of plate tectonics and continental drift. Lab covers mineral and rock identification, geologic time principles, and the interpretation of topographic and geologic maps. Prerequisites: none; lab may require field trips.

Extractions: Course Description: Bruce Railsback will teach a course on Alpine and Glacial Geology (GEOL 2096) in the University of New Orleans-Innsbruck study abroad summer program in Summer 2004. The course covers mountain-building processes and the world's different kinds of mountains and mountain ranges. Naturally, we look in some detail at the geology of the Alps. The course also covers glaciers, glaciation, glacial deposits, glaciated landscapes, and earth's glacial history. Railsback taught the course previously in 1997, 1998, 2002, and 2003. Obergurgl Trip is one of the highlights of the summer for most participants. The field trips require some walking and occasionally a little scrambling over rough terrain, but they definitely are not rugged climbing trips. It may be reassuring to know that the instructor himself is something of an acrophobe. (The image at lower left shows the 2003 Obergurgl field trip; it's a link to a larger image.) Innsbruck and the Austrian Land of Tirol are naturally a great place for this course. Innsbruck is in the Inn River Valley, where the Sill River coming down from the Brenner Pass joins the Inn. Just to the north of the Inn Valley are the Limestone Alps or Calcareous Alps; just to the south of the Inn Valley are the Metamorphic Alps.
