Trop A major in geology will provide the necessary background for those who expect to pursue graduate degrees in geology, environmental geology, hydrogeology, geochemistry, and other areas of geology. It also can provide experience in critical, analytical thinking and contribute to a liberal education, even if the graduate decides not to pursue a professional career in the geosciences. Recent graduates have been accepted into some of the best geology graduate programs in the nation. Other graduates use their general geologic knowledge, as well as their experience in areas such as hydrogeology, environmental geophysics and GIS, to obtain employment in rapidly expanding fields of environmental geoscience. At Bucknell, one can major in either geology or environmental geology, and each of these is available in both bachelor of arts and bachelor of science degree programs. These four tracks are united in having a common core of six courses in geology (GEOL 103*, 104, 201, 210, 214, 217). A bachelor of science track is appropriate for students who have made a decision that they will pursue a graduate degree in one of the geosciences or begin a career in a geologic/environmental profession. Students who elect a bachelor of arts track seek greater curricular flexibility allowing for a second major or a minor. Bachelor of arts students have attended graduate school or pursued careers in environmental law or policy, education, business, medicine, and science writing.

Extractions: For their Environmental Geology final project, Kevin Spradley and Robert Fowler (pointing) discuss potential sanitary landfill sites in southern Pope County using criteria covered earlier in the course. Besides regular courses, some geology students elect to work on an individual research project (GEOL 4991-2, Special Problems in Geology). Some projects that have been done recently include two students who did geological evaluations of two different sites for coal mining permit applications, two students who analyzed steep slopes for bedrock stability, and two students who worked on a project to evaluate problems with certain aggregate stone in Arkansas. GEOL 1004 Essentials of Earth Science An introduction to the fundamental topics of earth science including physical and historical geology, oceanography, and meteorology. Laboratory exercises include the study of minerals, rocks, fossils, topographic and geologic maps, and oceanographic and meteorological phenomena. Laboratory work will stress the use of the scientific method of problem solving. Lecture three hours, laboratory three hours. $5 laboratory fee. Duplicate credit for GEOL 1004 and GEOL 1014 will not be allowed. Elementary education majors who take both the GEOL 1004 and GEOL 1014 will receive credit for GEOL 1004 only. All other majors who take both GEOL 1004 and GEOL 1014 will receive credit for only GEOL 1014 unless student has selected option (b) for completing the science area of the General Education requirements.

Planet Earth A study of plate tectonics with emphasis on ancient and modern geological processes associated with mountain building. The course builds knowledge through field and classroom studies of Appalachian geology, and by comparison of the Appalachians with active mountain belts in South America, Indonesia, and Asia. The course also develops a geologic understanding of the seismic and volcanic hazards associated with mountain building. The overall aim of the course is to illustrate the historical, predictive, and practical aspects of geologic principles and reasoning in scientific and societal contexts. This course fulfills the lab-science distribution requirement.
