It is currently a department in the Ministry of Mines, Environment and Tourism of the Government of Zimbabwe. The Geological Survey pays an essential role in the promotion of economic growth of the country through the continuous generation, collection, archinving and dissemination of geoscientific data in an user friendly format to clients from all over the world. GEOLOGY AND MINERALISATION About 60% of the country is covered by an Archaen Granite Greenstone terrain well known for its rich endowment of gold and base metals. Cutting across the entire Archaen is the famous Great Dyke hosting one of the worlds largest reserves of chrome and platinoids. Covering the edges of the Archaen terrain are younger sedimentary rocks hosting huge reserves of coal.

The Geological Survey was formed to provide impartial, scientific information to help our nation answer these questions. In 1879, an act of Congress established the United States Geological Survey (USGS). A modern geological survey with full-time staff and an active field program evolved by the early 1940s to meet the resource demands of a growing population and the strategic mineral needs of a nation at war. Program emphasis through this early period was on economic resources including dimension stone, ore minerals, and clay. In the 1960s and 1970s a major exploration boom was fueled in part by the survey's detailed reports on ore deposits. While economic aspects remain a part of survey programs, the burgeoning population of southern and coastal Maine has required us to refocus our resources toward ground water and coastal marine issues. By using a modern geographic information system we are improving the analysis of map information and our ability to make high quality maps available to the public.
