Extractions: Prospectus Political Unconscious 153), forsaking the synchronic representation of multiple character for the more and more detailed depiction of the positioning of a particular subject in time and space. Earlier in this century, various British and American modernists deployed textual innovation to trace out the precise specificities of multiple characters' consciousness interacting within the work of art. Depictions of individuals in novels such as Ulysses The Waves and As I Lay Dying were surrounded by various sorts of ellipses intended to emphasize the importance of the spaces between individuals. The more recent work which I intend to examine emphasizes the positioning of the individual in relation to its various spacial and temporal contexts, focusing not on individuals separated by some sort of break or lapse but in their constant connection to a variety of social and historical contexts and discourses. Ulysses and The Waves As ready distinctions of all sorts have come to be more rigorously interrogated in our poststructuralist moment, however, artists have experimented with a variety of techniques to examine those spaces within collections of items conceived as entities, which were previously ignored simply as that between significant spacial and temporal positions. The resulting technical innovations are most readily apparent in texts which situate themselves at the edge of such constructs.

Extractions: Our company has developed a piece of software for the last year that has solved many of the negative comments that we have seen mentioned about other DJ'ing software. For instance there are issues about drift, cue points, mixing more than two tracks etc. We believe that we have solved all of these issues and our software has many advanced features such as being able to mix up to 4096 tracks simultaneously, full beat locking so that drift will never occur, full Break matching so that tracks come in at exactly the right place, beat matching where there is no beat so that music intros play perfectly synchronised in that their 1st beat comes in at exactly the right place no matter how long the intro, half/quarter/double speed mxing, and plenty of other features. Our biggest concern after reading many of the posts here is that there seems to be quite a big divide between the oldskool DJ's who have only ever mixed vinyl and the up and coming breed of digital DJ's who are experimenting with CD mixers and software in general. We ourselves can see no reason why decks and software can not work in harmony. For instance why would a DJ not find it beneficial to have a third 'software deck' mixing a back beat while mixing vinyl over the top etc.

Western Dhimmis : Folks who read the Nick Denton post that was linked to by Glenn Reynolds might want to check out this Bruce Bawer article in Partisan Review , which covers both the good (examples of assimilation to Western norms) and bad (examples of the converse), and in effect raises the question of whether there is intellectual and institutional support for the exact opposite of what Nick Denton asks for; in effect, the self-transformation in the name of tolerance of Western societies into the status of Dhimmitude to satisfy the non-assimilating Moslem immigrants, in the name of multuculturalism, and whether tolerant people are blind to the dangers to the toleration they value in being too accomodating to the practices of immigrants who are radical islamists that reject the social mores of the societies they're immigrating to. It's certainly a quandary for people, I'm sure. It's a well reasoned and thoughtful article, not an intemprate polemic, worth pondering. A key section states:

I've been struggling with this portrait for some time and in the process I've learned a lot about what I ought not to do for any future ones. This has been very slow progress for me but I really want to get this right. I've got the point where I'm reasonably happy with the face. I'll turn my focus to the hair next so any advice on approaching that would be helpful for me. I appreciate any comments and suggestions.

Extractions: Connecticut's own 100 Demons have resurfaced on Deathwish Inc, bringing on an onslaught of sound that will have you bleeding from the ears. Pinch harmonics, heavy riffs, and brutally brutal vocals, 100 Demons leave little to be desired in the realm of metal. This self titled release is nothing short of a soundtrack for destruction. It is one of the tougher releases to come out of CT this year. It's no wonder all the inmates write to my radio show requesting them. My first listen through the one thing I kept thinking over and over was "This reminds me of Killswitch Engage", but once I got past the gratuitous guitar squeals and pinch harmonics I really started to enjoy the album. Least we forget these guys put on one hell of a live show. Pick up the album and rock out in your car to it. I'll admit it. I have a weakness for youth crew hardcore. Fast tempo's, sing alongs, and shitty recordings get me excited. Desperate Measures fits nicely into my record collection. Awesome lyrics, energy and some catchy riffs comprise "Never Enough Time". I wish there were more bands playing this style of music. Fans of The First Step, Far From Breaking, and Our Turn will no doubt like this band. One side note, there are a few minor production issues with this release that most people will overlook, like me. Buy the record it's a good time.

Extractions: This immensely popular gothic novel desperately attempts to overload the senses with scenes of the most graphic, morbid, sexual, and shocking images Lewis could concoct. With no deeper themes than the immensity of temptation's power and the way even a devout man may fall, Lewis' main goal seems to be to make us cringe. Culminating in an incestuous rape and murder scene, the novel just leaves a bad taste in your mouth. In the year of its publication The Monk was a smash hit in England, mostly among upper-class women. It was, in essence, a soap opera of yesterday, with about as much depth as that trite form of entertainment. I do believe that its amazing popularity is its only credit for any continued study, as an historical phenomenon, but not as great literature.

France Editorial Review And what a day it was: nearly 60 jazz musicians, gathered on a Harlem street one morning in 1958 for what photographer Art Kane rightly, if immodestly, calls "the greatest picture of that era of musicians ever taken" (incredibly, it was also Kane's first professional shoot). Like Ken Burns's Jazz , this 60-minute documentary, an Oscar nominee in 1995, is a mixed-media affair: still photographs and 8 millimeter color footage (shot by bassist Milt Hinton and his wife) of the day itself are combined with interviews, background music, and performance clips of some of the players involved (from legends like Lester Young, Count Basie, Charles Mingus, and Thelonious Monk to lesser-knowns like Maxine Sullivan, Red Allen, and Vic Dickenson) to tell the story. There are anecdotes about 35-cent dinners, all-night jams, and film loaded upside down; about pianist Horace Silver's vegetarian diet and trumpeter Roy Eldridge's high notes; about old friends reuniting and what Hinton calls "just sheer happiness." Looking at the photo years later, Dizzy Gillespie sums it up simply: "There's a whole lotta people I like on there!"
