Genetics The Caspari Papers The collection, in 19 boxes, consists primarily of correspondence post-1938, but includes also a significant series relating to the foundation and publication of the series Advances in Genetics under the editorship of M. Demerec and the publisher, Academic Press. The collection includes mss. of some of Caspari's papers and notes for his lectures on developmental genetics. There are many grant reports of his supported research on the moth Ephestia . Caspari's interests, not only in genetics and general biology, but especially in behavioral genetics and evolution, are reflected. The collection is arranged alphabetically by author or corporate entry. The field of research to which Ernst Caspari devoted himself during his predoctoral training was the genetics of a pleiotropic gene in the mealmoth Ephestia kuhniella Ephestia , especially in respect to the biochemical aspects of the aa eye color mutant.

Extractions: Colorectal cancer is a commonly diagnosed cancer in both men and women. In 2004, an estimated 146,940 new cases will be diagnosed, and 56,730 deaths from colorectal cancer will occur.[ ] Two kinds of observations indicate a genetic contribution to colorectal cancer risk: (1) increased incidence of colorectal cancer among persons with a family history of colorectal cancer; and (2) families in which multiple family members are affected with colorectal cancer, in a pattern indicating autosomal dominant inheritance of cancer susceptibility.[

Breast Cancer Genetics In Primary Care J Natl Cancer inst. 15. American Society of Clinical Oncology. 16. Kutner S. Breastcancer genetics and managed care The Kaiser Permanente experience. Cancer. http://www.pajournalcme.com/pajournal/cme/pa110a.htm
Extractions: Breast cancer is the most common cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death among American women. The average woman has a 1 in 8 lifetime risk of breast cancer; women with an inherited genetic mutation carry a higher-than-average burden of developing the malignancy (85% lifetime risk), often developing breast cancer at a younger age. For these women, recommendations for surveillance and management may be more stringent. It is therefore essential that primary care providers identify genetically susceptible women and help them understand the benefits, limitations, and implications of genetic testing for breast cancer. Given the potential liability associated with failure to identify a woman at high risk, primary care clinicians should practice standard risk analysis protocols and logical management practices.

Extractions: Society This is a final draft of a letter circulated earlier, which re-iterates the World Scientists' Statement's call for a moratorium and ban on biopatents. We are inviting other scientists to sign on, as we intend to present it to the WTO meeting in Seattle Nov. 30 to Dec. 3, 1999. To sign on, either e-mail us , or sign here at the Institute of Science in Society website Institute of Science in Society MI7 6AA, UK m.w.ho@open.ac.uk i-sis@dircon.co.uk Open Letter from World Scientists to All Governments Summary We, the undersigned scientists call for the immediate suspension of all environmental releases of GM crops, bothcommercially and in open field trials, for at least five years; and for patents on organisms, seeds, cell lines and genes to be revoked and banned. Patents on life-forms are allowing corporations to pirate intellectual and genetic resources from Third World nations and increasing corporate monopoly on food production and distribution. GM crops are not necessary to feed the world. There is already more than enough food for everyone. What we need is an end to food monopoly and a more equitable distribution. The public have been promised miracle GM crops that will fix nitrogen, resist drought and improve yield. Instead, the only crops on offer are engineered to be tolerant to wide-spectrum herbicides manufactured by the same corporations, or are engineered with bt-toxins to kill insect pests. The latest largescale survey of GM crops showed they offered no benefits. On the contrary, they yield significantly less and require the use of more herbicides.
