Genetic Traits From Parent To Offspring will have over 10 opportunities to pair with other students and apply the principlesfor genetics in a fun activity. Students will have to teach each other and http://www.teachersnetwork.org/NTNY/lessonplans/chloe.htm
Extractions: Students create their own offspring and see how the traits they contribute may or may not show up in the offspring, depending on what genes the other parent contributes. In this way, students will learn the many possible combinations that can be acheived by combining a few simple traits in different ways. The activity allows students to move around and interact with many other students. It includes writing and drawing, which highlight different student strengths. The drawings provide much amusement for the whole class. The best feature of this lesson is the built-in student self-evaluation that results from multiple student pairings. Any student with a shakey understanding of genetics will have over 10 opportunities to pair with other students and apply the principles for genetics in a fun activity. Students will have to teach each other and reach an agreement on the offspring's phenotype.

Extractions: Special Issues: Childhood Obesity Why Is Childhood Obesity A Concern? The number of overweight children has more than doubled over the past decade. With over 25% of children being obese it is no wonder that childhood obesity is becoming a serious health problem. Obesity in children results in many emotional and physical problems. Emotional problems include altered body image, depression, and poor self-esteem. Physical concerns are that obese children are more likely to become obese adults. Adult obesity increases the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and certain types of cancer. The more obese a child is, and the longer a child remains obese, the more likely the child will become an obese adult. In fact, many of these health complications including type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and high blood cholesterol, that once initially occurred in adulthood, are being to appear in overweight children. Cause Of Childhood Obesity The cause of childhood obesity is poorly understood.
New York City Present a teachIn on ~ Technology and Globalization ~. Among the most urgent activitiesof the day is the Initiative on the New Human genetic Technologies Pat http://www.ifg.org/nyc.html
Extractions: 40 Speakers + 25 Workshops Our society places all its bets on technology as the panacea for our ills. But it may be time to reconsider. Far from Paradise-on-Earth, we are rolling toward ecological collapse: rapid climate change and rising seas; ozone holes; loss of species and habitat; accelerated cancer rates; terminal forms of air, water, and soil pollution, as well as unprecedented levels of social, political, and personal alienation and despair. All are rooted in the excesses of technology. Now a terrifying new generation of technologies from biotechnology to eugenics to robotics to nanotechnology are raising the stakes and bringing unprecedented new threats to the planet. Meanwhile the new telecommunications technologies that we had hoped would bring democracy and empowerment may be producing the opposite: rampant commercialization, global corporate concentration and mergers, and centralization rather than decentralization.

Extractions: Current Activities NP non-deterministic polynomial time analysis environment: We live in a world in which analysis is performed in a logical framework. Every question which we can answer is answered with a unique answer. On a Quiz, papers that have answers that agree with those on the answer sheet are right; the others are wrong. Logical systems satisfy closure; every proposition has a unique conclusion. This same world is one in which rationality holds sway; many conclusions are expected. Solutions are contradictory. For every one who sees clearly that a stock share should be sold, there is another one to whom it is obvious that the shares should be bought. For every Pro there is a Con. I am exploring the potential of non-deterministic analysis by applying it to the processing of the audio used by a hearing aid. It turns out that this approach yields unexpected benefits. For example, signals from an array of two or more microphones can be processed so that the sound from various sources in the sound field can be factored from the total signal. Each individual source can thus be channeled to a hearing aid, and so provide a solution to the cocktail party effect hearing aid users complain about. I am of the opinion that the non-deterministic system supplies some of the truth, or pseudo truth, that the deterministic system lacks. Digital Processing for Hearing Aids.

Extractions: 17 August 2000 HENRY GEE The eponymous and tragic hero in Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray keeps his youthful good looks despite a life of corruption, debauchery and murder his sins are visited instead on a ghastly portrait. Dorian Gray escaped what Wilde thought was the fate of all men that the scars of their lives would be worn on their faces. What can we tell of something from its outside? Researchers in America now report how varied forms and behaviour of human breast tumours can be related to (similarly diverse) genes expressed within them. This approach should open the way to marked improvements in our understanding of the genetic aspects of tumour formation. David Botstein of Stanford University School of Medicine, Stanford, California, and colleagues have drawn up such molecular portraits of tumours. They report their results in Nature Botstein's team analysed breast tumour genetics using new 'biochip' technology that samples the simultaneous activities of thousands of genes. In fact the researchers studied some 8,102 genes of 65 breast tumour specimens from 42 different patients. The data were then grouped to relate gene activity and particular clinical phenomena, including reactions to chemotherapy.

Looking Ahead Using computers to teach is a fairly new idea. These fables were based on geneticsproblems. They could be used as an unifying theme for the activities. http://biologica.concord.org/webtest1/July 27, 2001 Web Page.htm
Extractions: Looking Ahead The researchers are either on vacation, busy analyzing, or writing. Guess its time for us, the curriculum people to have our say. We have been looking at what we have been teaching and how we teach it. What we teach is pretty good, we think. You can hardly go wrong with Mendelian genetics as the basic Genetics curriculum: monohybrid, dihybrid, incomplete dominance, sex-linkage, polygenetic traits, lethal genes, they are all there. But how we teach it is another matter. Using computers to teach is a fairly new idea. All of us are still feeling our way in how to do this. Inquiry? Yes. Constructivism? Yes. Critical Thinking? Yes, yes. We believe in all of these things. Our problem is how best to use this new technology to motivate students to think. From the beginning (going all the way back to GenScope) we have used puzzles as the basis of the curriculum. We pose a question: Can these two horned dragons ever have a hornless baby? The student has to cross the parents, either by allowing meiosis to occur and choosing the correct gametes (if they have the right genes) or by inspecting the offspring of the cross in pedigree view. If the parents each have an "h", then yes, they can have a hornless baby. If one or both of the parents is homozygous dominant (HH), then no hornless babies will be produced. In this case, hints are given that the student has to change the genes of the parents from homozygous dominant to heterozygous. If s/he takes the hint success. If not, the message says to try again. Short answer and essay questions round out the exercise and log files are collected.
Can Neurobiology Teach Us Anything About Consciousness? of factor came to be modified by genetics into the sound funny to you, but let meteach the background of conscious states with brain activities is unsound. http://www.ecs.soton.ac.uk/~harnad/Papers/Py104/church.neuro.html
Extractions: Salk Institute Human nervous systems display an impressive roster of complex capacities, including the following: perceiving, learning and remembering, planning, deciding, performing actions, as well as the capacities to be awake, fall asleep, dream, pay attention, and be aware. Although neuroscience has advanced spectacularly in this century, we still do not understand in satisfying detail how any capacity in the list emerges from networks of neurons. We do not completely understand how humans can be conscious, but neither do we understand how they can walk, run, climb trees or pole vault. Nor, when one stands back from it all, is awareness intrinsically more mysterious than motor control. Balanced against the disappointment that full understanding eludes us still, is cautious optimism, based chiefly on the nature of the progress behind us. For cognitive neuroscience has already passed well beyond what skeptical philosophers once considered possible, and continuing progress seems likely. In assuming that neuroscience can reveal the physical mechanisms subserving psychological functions, I am assuming that it is indeed the brain that performs those functions that capacities of the humans mind are in fact capacities of the human brain. This assumption and its corollary rejection of Cartesian souls or spirits or "spooky stuff" existing separately from the brain is no whimsy. On the contrary, it is a highly probable hypothesis, based on evidence currently available from physics, chemistry, neuroscience and evolutionary biology. In saying that physicalism is an hypothesis, I mean to emphasize its status as an empirical matter. I do not assume that it is a question of conceptual analysis, a priori insight, or religious faith, though I appreciate that not all philosophers are at one with me on this point.

Extractions: The UCSD Genetics Training Program is a predoctoral program incorporating elements of the UCSD School of Medicine , the UCSD Department of Biology , the UCSD Department of Neuroscience , the UCSD Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry , and The Salk Institute for Biological Studies . The goal of this program is to train graduate students for future careers as academic or industrial scientists investigating genetic mechanisms, or using genetic methods to understand biological problems important for human health. The members of the training faculty for this program have joined together to create a common vision of contemporary Genetics training resting on a foundation of basic Biological and Biomedical Science. The programs integrated educational principles of Genetics include rigorous education in the classical principles and intellectual methods of Genetics, research training in the newest methods of Classical and Molecular Genetics and the development of an appreciation of the problems, outlooks, and ethical issues associated with modern Clinical and Medical Genetics including Human Gene Therapy. Our training philosophy is to take the best students, provide them with a strong general background in basic Biology, Neurosciences, or Biomedical Science and Physiology, and then teach them intellectual and technical methods of Genetics by steeping them in the logic and culture of Genetics investigation, and exposing them to the lore and classical methods of Genetics. By putting these focused intellectual activities into a broad biological, physiological, and clinical context, by providing training in the full range of Genetics disciplines from Classical to Molecular, by exposing the trainees to a broad range of research organisms, and by giving the trainees access to outstanding mentors and research problems, the Genetic Training Program develops uniquely prepared graduates.
