Extractions: Crystallography and Mineralogy sites David A. Barthemy's Mineralogy database concentrates on the science of mineralogy and crystallography. Lists and tables of data are also provided to aid in mineral identification. In addition, this page includes numerous links to other science-weighted web pages. Mike and Darcy Howard's Introduction to Crystallography and Mineral Crystal Systems covers some of the basic topics in crystallography, including crystal classes and the six crystal systems. This website is easy to read, with graphics that aid understanding. Crystallography 101 , created by Dr. Bernhard Rupp of The University of California Lawrence Livermore Laboratory, presents a considerably more advance treatment of crystallography. Minerals under the Microscope , designed by Dr. Charlotte Gladstone of The University of Bristol, covers the basic principles of optical mineralogy. The Mineral Spectroscopy Server , created by Dr. George R. Rossman of the Cal Tech Mineral Spectroscopy Lab, provides information on the causes of color in minerals, mineral absorption spectra in the visible and infrared regions of the spectrum, and Raman spectra of minerals. This web site includes photographs of minerals in hand sample, scanning electron microscope photographs taken at very high magnification, and thin sections or thin slices of minerals viewed with an polarizing microscope. It is designed for the advanced student.

Science (from scientia, Latin for "knowledge") refers to the systematic acquisition of new knowledge about nature and the body of already existing knowledge so gained. The scientific method is based on careful observation and the testing of theories by experiment. Science does not claim to make any statements about how nature actually "is", for the scientist should know that we can only make conclusions about our observations of nature. The development of Quantum Mechanics in the early 20th century showed us that our observations equate to interactions, and the incredible implications of wave-particle duality made "objectivity" in science practically impossible.

Energy is more interesting than you think. Energy is one of those subjects that you don't think about until you have to. Until that lousy day last summer. As a technology guy, I've always been somewhat intrigued with the idea of networks (like Distributed / grid computing). So I was intrigued when I heard the author this summer speak about his "energy grid" (which he calls it the Energy Internet). Granted his terminology seemed a little....1990s, but his point made sense: if we were all sharing off the same energy grid, the market would reward those who used less energy and extract from those who use more. And like the internet, the "energy internet" can reroute itself around a problem. (Take that, Ohio!) What I loved most about this book is that it's not aimed at granola crunchy people. It's also not aimed at the NPR / anti-SUV crowd. I think It's written for the "armchair skeptic" like myself. I'm not stupid enough to think that BP wants to save the world. But I think those ads are meant to influence how we think about energy providers.

Extractions: Dispelling the myths about witchcraft By Laura Holmes, Debra Wiley says she cringes every time someone asks her, "Are you a good witch or a bad witch?" "I don't walk around asking people, 'Are you a good Christian or a bad Christian?'" says Wiley, a self-proclaimed Wiccan witch from Dover. Maybe if people were better educated about her religion, she says, they would know better. Wiley and her friend, Scarlett Ridgway, a Wiccan witch from Portsmouth, have been "out of the broom closet" for many years. Neither of them hide the fact they are witches, but because of 500 years of persecution in Europe and America, and decades of negative stereotyping, many others are not so public. The possibility of harassment, verbal abuse and, in extreme cases, violence make many witches afraid to take advantage of one of America's most prized possessions freedom of religion "all because of misunderstanding," says Rebecca Murphy, a Wiccan witch and licensed pagan minister from Manchester.
