Extractions: William McKinley Served as president in 1881 James Abram Garfield (1831-1881), was the last president to be born in a log cabin. Nobody knows what kind of president he would have been because he was assassinated only a few months after taking office. Garfield, a Republican, was the fourth president to die in office and the second to be assassinated. Possibly Garfield accomplished more by his death than if he had lived to complete his term. A major characteristic of national politics in his day was the so-called spoils system, in which thousands of government employees were fired every time a new president took office. Garfield spent most of his short time as president filling these jobs with his political supporters. Although not a reformer, he wrote in his diary shortly before he was shot: "Some civil service reform will come by necessity after the wearisome years of wasted presidents have paved the way for it." The assassination of Garfield by a disappointed job-seeker shocked the nation into action. Two years later, Congress began civil service reform with the Pendleton Civil Service Act. Garfield was a big, athletic, handsome man with blond hair and beard. Before becoming president, he was successful as professor, college president, Civil War general, and U.S. congressman. He spoke and wrote well, read widely, and even composed poetry. He occasionally entertained his friends by writing Greek with one hand and at the same time writing Latin with the other. Warmhearted and genial, Garfield wanted to be well liked and generally was. But his eagerness to please everyone sometimes led him into questionable dealings with unscrupulous people.

See the Death in Office Rule for Presidential Monuments Mike's Notes: Arriving at the James Garfield Monument, I found that the doors to the interior of the mausoleum were locked. Being the inquisitive type that I am, I went to the cemetery office and asked them if the doors are ever unlocked. The lady said that the mausoleum was closed for the winter. Since it was mid-March, I asked her when winter was going to be over. She said that they would be opening the doors the following Monday (I believe this was Thursday that I was there). I told the lady that I was only there for one day, and I didn't know when I would get back to see the inside again. Her sarcastic answer: "Well, I'll tell Mr. Garfield you stopped by." So, if you're ever in Cleveland and decide to visit Lake View Cemetery, give the office staff a hard time for me! Webmaster's Note: Since adding this grave, I have been in contact with the community relations director at Lakeview Cemetery. She has been very kind and helpful, as well as apologetic to me for the actions of their wayward staff member. So, not being one to harbor hard feelings, I rescind my request that people give the office staff a hard time!

This made Polk the first president to run the country extending from the Atlantic Ocean all the way to the Pacific Ocean. It was during President Polks term in 1845 that the abolitionist and escaped slave Frederick Douglass wrote his autobiography, endangering his own freedom by doing so. President Polk believed that the United States had a "manifest destiny" to expand. His attempts to gain more of Texas, New Mexico, and California led to the Mexican War. The invention of the revolver by Samuel Colt helped the U.S. to win this war and gain five hundred thousand square miles of land. Polk had promised to serve only one term in office. True to his word he retired at the end of his term. He died only three months after

Extractions: For only the second time in our country's history, the son of a former president has himself been elected president. Is there something in the presidential gene pool that propels the sons of chief executives into the political fray? Or is it just the learning experiences, connections, and family name that give them an advantage? More of the latter than the former, probably, but surprisingly few presidential "sons of fortune" toss their hat into the political ring. Of almost 90 boys born to presidents, we've found only 18 that have held political office. (The list below may not be complete, but should be pretty close!
