Extractions: Uganda Travellers are flocking to Uganda's beautiful mountains, trekking opportunities and communities of mountain gorillas. Kampala is now the modern, bustling capital of a new Uganda, a country with one of the fastest growing economies in Africa. Uganda's long string of tragedies since independence has been a staple of the Western media, so most people still regard the country as an unstable place to be avoided. However, it's getting back on its feet and the transformation is little short of astounding. Before independence, Uganda was a prosperous and cohesive country. Its great beauty led Winston Churchill to refer to it as the 'Pearl of Africa', but by the mid-1980s it lay shattered and bankrupt, broken by tribal animosity, nepotism, insanely corrupt politics, mass murder and military tyranny. Despite the killings and brutality, Ugandans appear to have weathered the storm remarkably well. However, even rose-coloured glasses won't hide the country's huge debt, AIDS crisis and wonky human rights record. Parts of Uganda should be considered off-limits due to a highly volatile security situation. Rebels in the north are responsible for many crimes against civilians. Ethnic conflict and banditry are common irritants in the northeastern Karamoja region and in neighbouring Katakwi district.

History B African Languages The number of distinctive languages spoken in Africa is open to debate. Some experts put the number at around 2,000, while others count more than 3,000. Virtually all of these languages originated in Africa. The most widely spoken indigenous African language is Swahili, spoken by nearly 50 million Africans, followed by Hausa and Yoruba, each with more than 20 million speakers. Several languages have only a few thousand speakers. Scholars generally recognize four African language families: Niger-Congo, Afro-Asiatic, Nilo-Saharan, and Khoisan.

PEOPLE AND SOCIETY The 1991 Uganda census counted 16,671,705 people. By 1998 the population had grown to an estimated 22.2 million Ugandans, giving the country a population density of 92 per sq km (238 per sq mi). The estimated growth rate of the population in 1998 was 2.8 percent. The birth rate was 49 per 1,000 people and the death rate 19 per 1,000. Life expectancy at birth was 42.6 years. The fertility rate, the number of births per woman, was 7.1. Almost all Ugandans are black Africans. Foreign residents make up less than 4 percent of the population and come mostly from neighboring states. The population is concentrated in the south, particularly in the crescent at the edge of Lake Victoria and in the southwest. Uganda is predominantly rural with only 13 percent of the population living in urban areas. Kampala, near Lake Victoria, is Uganda's intellectual and business center and its only city. Jinja, the most important industrial center, is located on the Nile at Lake Victoria. The next largest towns are Mbale, Masaka, Mpigi, and Mbarara. A. Ethnicity and Language (

It is a country blessed with contrasting physical features ranging from extensive plains with undulating hills, to snow-capped mountains, waterfalls, meandering rivers and spectacular flora and fauna. Uganda is the source of the Nile River and Africa's largest body of fresh water, Lake Victoria. Its great beauty led Winston Churchill to refer to it as the "Pearl of Africa." Most Americans are familiar with Uganda, as it is the home to the Silver Back Gorillas in Bandeau National Park (see below).
