Extractions: Picking the best A womans' day is full of food buying preparation, cooking and clearing up. The unreliability in the supply of ingredients in Africa regularly means that a variety of alternative ingredients are used when cooking a dish, so the end result is often unique and provides great variety. Traditionally the people of Gambia eat two meals a day, lunch and a later evening meal, although a snack breakfast is often taken and small snacks and fruit are eaten all day. This pattern of meals also fits in well with Islam after midday prayers and after the evening prayers at sunset. Both meals are likely to be based on some sort of thick stew or soup with some sort of starch (bread, rice or fufu, which is made by pounding grains and vegetables such as millet, yams, or plantains to a flour and boiling it into a sticky paste) In Gambia the stew and starch are often combined in one pot to make a benachin meal or jollof rice.

Black Star Journal CULTURAL TOURISM IN CASAMANCE AND gambia Last week, I listened A Dutch woman explainedher involvement in small development projects in West africa. http://popeyeafrica.blogspot.com/2004/01/cultural-tourism-in-casamance-and.html
Extractions: Last week, I listened to an interesting documentary on the English service of Radio Netherlands . A Dutch woman explained her involvement in small development projects in West Africa. In the last decade, she has set up over 15 projects in the Casamance region of southern Senegal and in The Gambia. From building a health center, to putting a new roof on a school, to providing running water, to giving poor women mills to grind rice and maize (corn). She has also set up cultural exchanges between Senegal and The Netherlands. She's been lauded by the Senegalese government for the way she involves villagers in every phase of her projects. One of the most intriguing things for outsiders is, as Radio Netherlands notes, that the woman and a Senegalese partner set up a lodge on the coast of the Casamance. It's a fairly rustic place with only solar electricity and well water. But the surroundings are idyllic, with the warm waters of the Atlantic, palm trees and lush vegetation.
Extractions: Washington File Staff Writer UTG and ECU students participating in classroom discussions. Washington - A partnership between East Carolina State University (ECU) in Greenville, North Carolina, and the University of The Gambia in Banjul is bringing American and Gambian students together and encouraging them "to look at things in a completely different way," says Dr. Elmer Poe, a specialist in distance educational learning (known as D.E.). Dr. Poe, who oversees the project along with cultural psychologist Dr. Rosina Chia, assistant vice chancellor for global academic initiatives, came to Washington recently to discuss the newly inaugurated effort with the State Department's Bureau of African Affairs and with Margaret Tutwiler, the under secretary for public diplomacy and public affairs. The project, which was initiated with State Department support in the summer of 2003, brings the students in Greenville and Banjul together several times a week in a virtual classroom where they see and speak to each other in real time through two-way video and computer link-ups, using inexpensive and low-tech connections. The students are also partnered so they can conduct required daily e-mail chats. "We see this technology for our own students as a way for those who aren't going to get to The Gambia or to China or to any of the other cultures, to really interact with people from these cultures," said Poe, who is the associate provost for distance education and academic information technology at ECU.

Extractions: By Betty Gabrielli Adenike Sharpley More Photos O CTOBER 1, 1998Last week a Cleveland State University fan talked about Dance Diaspora's September 24 performance this way: "Oh when the drums sound, the earth shakes. Their performance at CSU is going to be packed." And it was. "We blew them away," says Adenike Sharpley, the company's director and choreographer and director of Oberlin's Afrikan Heritage House. "We had standing room only." Enthusiastic audiences greet the dancers whenever they perform off campus, whether it's 400 filmgoers getting in the groove at a gala party highlighting the 20th International Cleveland Film Festival last May or at Tufts University a few days ago. Sharpley, who came to the College with a wealth of experience as a choreographer and dancer, including work with the legendary Katherine Dunham, created Dance Diaspora in 1992 as a touring ensemble. For the last six years, she and the student dancers have broadened access to Africa's rich cultural heritage by performing in venues up and down the Atlantic seaboard. But the longest trip they've ever taken was not in the U.S. but to West Africa, this past summer, to learn the basics of their art form
