Extractions: Email: pmark@wesleyan.edu This seminar investigates some of the diverse ways in which West African peoples have articulated their sense of who they are by means of the buildings they construct and the material culture they create. We will focus on architecture in historical perspective, and on the contemporary phenomenon of revitalized ritual and folklore. The course begins by asking fundamental questions about Art History. Is the discipline able to encompass broad issues of contemporary African culture and identity? Is African Art itself a meaningful concept? Or is it hopelessly bound to Western culture? At the same time, the introductory meetings offer a critical reevaluation of other analytical categories. If we retain the concept of "African art," contemporary culture forces us to redefine its boundaries to include such largely twentieth century phenomena as folkloric dance and the re-creation of self-consciously "traditional" religious rituals. And the African subjects of our study, too, must be redefined, insofar as the "ethnic group," viewed in historical perspective, ceases to exist as a fixed feature of the African cultural landscape. Ethnic identity is itself in constant change. What is ethnicity anyway, and how is ethnic identity related to culture?

It is a by-product of a relation between people and a society speaks out through its culture. Culture gives expression to the social thought, beliefs and values of human beings. A society which has no culture would be composed of persons who are expressionless. Cultural tools, like songs, dances, drama, have been utilised as coping mechanisms to prevent total social disintegration. This has been the strength of many African societies. The sense of community has served as a welfare system for many African societies where the old, the disabled and children are given protection. Even though poverty increases dependency and causes strain to the providers, without the sense of community the weight of poverty would be much heavier. The Gambia is a multi ethnic and multi cultural society. There is no area in the Gambia which is entirely habited by one ethnic group. The ethnic groups are closely knit together by cohabitation and therefore, there is a certain cultural symbiosis among them. Click and listen to a village drumming in Kuntaur Fullakunda In that regard there is a tendency towards the establishment of a Gambian National Culture, which will be a sum total of all the ethnic cultures. For instance the Gambia National Troupe is composed of all the ethnic groups and their musical repertoire is drawn from all the ethnic groups. The members of the troupe are capable of singing songs from each ethnic group and equally capable of dancing them.

Near the mouth of The River, the country is over 30 miles (48 kilometres) wide but further upriver the width diminishes to 15 miles (24 kilometres). On The Coast, it meets -the Atlantic with impressive sand cliffs and sports miles of unspoiled palm fringed beaches. It borders with the Republic of Senegal on the landward sides. The country is mostly a low Plateau which decreases in height as it nears the Atlantic Coast. The Plain is broken in a few places by low flat-topped hills and The River Gambia and its tributaries. The area extending from Mac Carthy Island, where Georgetown is located, to the Eastern end of the country is enclosed by low Rocky Hills which appear to be volcanic. The soil, especially in the Kuntaur District, is clay along the Banks of The River, but elsewhere are alluvial soils, red, brown and grey sands, some gravel and isolated ironstone rocks. The Coast and River Banks consist largely of Mangrove swamps, and the lower part of the River has steep banks which are covered with tropical forest, Bamboo being characteristic. Away from the River, there is wooded grassland, for the Gambia is in the Savannah Region of West Africa.

Each offers a different visual and cultural experience, but common to all of the routes is a lack of significant hills. Most people will probably find the most interesting direction to the south, into the Gambia and Casamance and then east to the upper Casamance. Extractions: ( Africa "Mother Land") The Gambia's main indigenous groups have a highly stratified society wherein status is determined by birth. At the top of the social heap are traditional noble and warrior families, followed by the farmers, traders and persons of caste - blacksmiths, leather workers, wood workers, weavers and griots (GREE-oh). Griots are the lowest of the castes but are highly respected, as they are in charge of passing on the oral traditions and are usually the only ones who can recite a family or village history. Slaves occupied the lowest rung of the social ladder, and although slavery is now long gone, many descendants of former slaves still work as tenant farmers for the masters of old. The overwhelming majority of The Gambia's population is Muslim, though many practitioners combine their faith with traditional beliefs. It's not uncommon to see Gambians wearing a small leather pouch around their neck, arm or waist; called gris-gris (pronounced 'gree-gree'), these amulets are thought to ward off evil or bring good luck. Devout Muslims sometimes hedge their bets by keeping a small verse from the Quran inside.

Extractions: Lack of archaeological finds of musical instruments or music-related items makes it difficult to construct a deep history of music in West Africa; the traditions are centuries, perhaps even millennia, old. The traditional music is still playing an important role in the everyday West African society. The traditional musicians (Griot in French, Jali/Jeli in Mandinka and Fula, Gewel in Wolof) function as living libraries; they are the voice of oral history, storytelling, proverbs, negotiations and various forms of praising. Drumming, which has a close association with the blacksmith-sculptor artisan group, and hunter music are probably the oldest.
