This brochure will give an introduction to Tumani Tenda and inform visitors, tour operators and Gambians what activities are available at Tumani Tenda Eco-tourism Camp. Tumani Tenda is a Jolla Village with approximately 300 inhabitants living in seven extended families. It is situated 25km east of Brikama and 3 km from Kafatu, on a tributary/Bolong of the Gambia River. This small hamlet derives its name from a peanut picker, called Tumani, who lived in the area; Tenda means riverbank. The founder of the village, the late Alhaji Osman, a Koran scholar, established the community 30 years ago after immigrating from Casamance. A community evolved which is described as a religious community embracing certain values, notably a sustainable attitude to the natural environment, a socially responsible style of living, respect for the elderly, independence, self sustainability and a sense of community. Tumani Tenda owns 140 hectares of land, of which 89 hectares are sustainably cultivated, with a species rich forest that is continually upgraded with seedlings and serves as a pharmacy and natural water reservoir. Plants and crops grow in abundance and include maize, millet, groundnuts, vegetables, herbs and spices, bananas, grapefruits, oranges, mangoes, lemons and many others.

Extractions: There is evidence to suggest that The Gambia like most West African countries was inhabited 1.6 million years ago. The most direct evidence of prehistoric settlement however came from more recent times. The Stone Circles and Shell Mound Sites illustrate widespread human settlement from around 1000 A.D. The existence of the River Gambia was first documented by the Carthaginians in the 5th century B.C. The Gambia is a land of great ethnic diversity, with Mandinka, Wollof, Fula, Jolas and Serahulis forming the bulk of the indigenous population. Their origins are widespread and equally diverse. It is this ethnic mix that gives The Gambia its unique identity. By 1445 the Portuguese had established contact with the indigenous population introducing new influences. This began a period of Cross Cultural relations which over the next five decades substantially Changed the face of The Gambia. With the passage of time various European nations put their mark on the development of the Country albeit through the exploitation of the local population. The trade in slaves became one of the most profitable between West Africa and the Americas, peaking between the 1500s and 1700s. The vestiges of this inhuman trade Can still be seen today in the remains of European trading posts, especially Fort James Island which provided a Strategic defensive position for European interests and an effective staging post for the shipment of slaves from West Africa. This exploitation of The Gambia continued for over 300 years before legislation was introduced to eliminate the slave trade.

Extractions: Music: Shostakovich: Complete Symphonies - I currently own 5 versions of the 14th symphony (Kondrashin, Bernstein, Barshai (a relay of the preimiere in Moscow), Haitink, and another Rostropovich version on the Russian Revelation label. The Bernstein is saggy and contrived, the Haitink fails to excite, the earlier Rostropovich is in terrible audio, The Kondrashin is excellent and full of white heat, and the Barshai is even more hair raising. And where does this version of the 14th belong? Among the very best. This perfomance's soloists were the original soloists Shostakovich intended (Vishnevskaya and Rhestin). The orchestra though different from the primiere is still excellent. When listening to the Haitink, the orchestra plays with emotional reservation. Not the case here Music: Best Opera Album In The World - In addition to the great male tenors, Maria Callas, Victoria de los Angeles, Renata Scotto, Helga Dernesch, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, Elizabeth Schwarzkopf, Mirella Freni, Madi Mespli, and others sing the great arias. This double CD will make you cry, it is so beautiful, and this from someone who never paid much attention to opera. I listen to it only about once a week, so I won't get tired of it, and after several months it still grabs my by the throat and makes tears run down my face. In 40 years of listening to rock and pop, I have never experienced this before. Buy it!
