Extractions: This page provides a checklist of African museums and related organisations on the Internet. It has been developed by the International Committee for Documentation of the International Council of Museums ( ICOM-CIDOC ). There is also a general introduction to these pages. ICOM-CIDOC See the following sections: The International Council of Museums (ICOM) has compiled a Directory of Museums in Africa , published by Paul Kegan International in 1990. ICOM and the West African Museums Programme (WAMP) have published a Directory of Museum Professionals in Africa in 1993. While this concentrates on museum staff and their professional expertise, it also includes details of many of the museums in Africa. A new edition of this guide is currently under development. Further details from the ICOM Web site or the ICOM Secretariat The Virtual Library museum pages (VLmp) provide a general directory of museums on the Internet, supported by ICOM. At present, this only includes a few references to African museums , but it should be monitored for new entries.

Extractions: Dispatches Download Article Three outbreaks of Ebola hemorrhagic fever have recently occurred in Gabon. Virus has been isolated from clinical materials from all three outbreaks, and nucleotide sequence analysis of the glycoprotein gene of the isolates and virus present in clinical samples has been carried out. These data indicate that each of the three outbreaks should be considered an independent emergence of a different Ebola virus of the Zaire subtype. As in earlier Ebola virus outbreaks, no genetic variability was detected between virus samples taken during an individual outbreak. Serologic evidence has suggested the presence of Ebola virus in Gabon since 1982 ( ); 43 deaths due to Ebola hemorrhagic fever have already been reported during this prolonged outbreak ( Figure 1. Geographic distribution of the three Ebola virus hemorrhagic fever epidemics and site of the infected chimpanzee in Gabon. RNA was extracted from blood or primary tissue culture samples ( Table 1 ) by using a commercial kit (RNaid Kit , BIO 101, Inc., Vista, CA) as directed by the instruction manual. Viral sequences were amplified from RNA by using the reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) technique, and DNA products were sequenced as described elsewhere (

Extractions: American scholars write about the equatorial African country in the context of the political-economic, educational, and environmental pressures of global modernity, particularly how the country and its people respond to the forces that, like colonialism before it and mercantilism before that, seek to keep them small, dependent, and readily exploitable. The 13 studies discuss the natural environment, historical cases and issues, politics, and society, and prospects for the future. They are double spaced. Extractions: The French chemist Bugzig, who worked at one of nuclear fuel factories, paid attention to an unusual correlation of uranium isotopes in the ore, uranium 235 and uranium 238. This basically makes up 0.007202, whereas Bugzig discovered 0.00717. There were several variants to explain the strange correlation of uranium isotope in the ore. It was originally believed that the ore was poisoned with spent nuclear fuel. However, when they measured the radiation level, it turned out that this theory was wrong. Then it became known that the uranium ore with an extremely high uranium 235 constituent was mined in Gabon. At first, it was a mystery why the ore was enriched with the given isotope. Some believed that the uranium deposit was contaminated with spent UFO fuel. Others said that the ore was mined from the place where an ancient civilization stored its radioactive wastes. However, further research showed that the unusual ore appeared in a natural way. The products of deep radioactive decay found in the ore proved that nuclear reactions happened on the site of the uranium deposit two billion years ago.

Gabon Time and Date Gabon History Back to Top Discoveries of tools from the end of the Old Stone Age and the New Stone Age indicate early settlements in what is now Gabon, but little is known about the first inhabitants. By the 13th century ad the Mpongwe people were established in the country. The first contact with Europeans was with the Portuguese in the 1470s. During the following 350 years, first the Portuguese and later the French, Dutch, and English carried on a lucrative trade in slaves. The first permanent European settlement was made by the French, with the agreement of the Mpongwe ruler, in 1839. Libreville was founded a decade later by freed slaves. Over the next several years the French extended their rule inland, and in 1866 they appointed a governor to Gabon, which was then attached to the French Congo; it became part of French Equatorial Africa in 1910. During World War II (1939-1945) Gabon was held by the Free French, and in 1946 it became an overseas territory of France. The first Gabonese government council was formed in 1957, and Léon Mba became president of the council in 1958. Also in 1958, Gabon voted to become an autonomous republic in the French Community. Mba then became prime minister. The country declared its independence on August 17, 1960, and in 1961 Mba was elected president. A military coup overthrew President Mbas government in 1964, but French troops, in accordance with a Franco-Gabonese defense agreement, intervened and restored him to power; he was reelected president in 1967. Upon Mbas death later that year, Vice President Albert-Bernard Bongo succeeded to the presidency. Bongo, who later assumed the Islamic first name Omar, was reelected in 1973. During the mid-1970s Gabon began to loosen its ties with France and the French-speaking regional organizations. With Gabonization, the government became a partner in many foreign firms, and native Gabonese filled management positions once held by foreigners.
