Extractions: I am becoming increasingly concerned with the issue of childhood obesity and the generally unhealthy diets many children are consuming. I am sure there is a direct correlation with parents having such hectic schedules that mealtimes are forced to become that of the instant/packaged variety. Unfortunately, many parents still associate wholesome, healthy meals with hours of cooking time. Now before I anger the busy parents out there, I will state that I am sure most parents properly fuel their children and themselves to the best to their knowledge and abilities however; when life is on fast-forward Ill assume that there isnt time to sit back and assess the nutritional potency of their old stand-by meals? With this assumption, one could say that childhood obesity can be positively affected by changes to the entire familys approach to healthy food and meal planning.

Extractions: SOTW Nov 02: Avocado Oil NZ is a Bay of Plenty-based gourmet avocado oil producer, marketing its products under "The Grove" brand. The company was the first in the world to commercially produce cold pressed extra virgin avocado oil, and was recently in the news for securing Australian supermarket distribution for this product (Coles nationally and Woolworth's in three states). Avocado oil is threatening to become the next "it" ingredient (according to Jamie Oliver), for both nutritional and practical reasons. Its unique health and cooking properties include a nutty flavour, subtle avocado aroma, distinctive vibrant green colour, a burn smoke point of 255C (higher than traditional cooking oils), being low in 'bad' saturated fats, high in 'good' monounsaturated fats and completely cholesterol free. The site is compact and tastefully designed, with a large recipe library being the main feature. This grows monthly, fed by an on-going recipe competition, with entries going into the draw to win a case of Avocado Oil. Recipes are credited, with many coming from chefs and celebrity "foodies". A section called "The Laboratory" covers the many nutritional and health-giving properties of the oil derived from the flesh of "the most nutritious fruit on earth", including a typical nutritional analysis, and 'Pick the Tick' status. Another section covers avocado oil's skin care virtues. Visit

Bruce Williams , Division Director Safe Handling of Fruits and Vegetables In recognition of National Food Safety Education Month, the Food and Drug Protection Division of the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services has prepared the following information to ensure that your enjoyment of our State's delicious fruits and vegetables is not marred by an unfortunate and preventable food borne illness. Although not commonly associated with food poisoning, fruits and vegetables can harbor disease-causing bacteria. Their growth environment, such as soil, is a rich source of microbes. Poor agriculture practices, such as irrigation with unsanitary water, also may introduce bacteria. Poor storage and transportation practices can result in contamination, as can poor handling by retailers, restaurants and consumers in the home. Rinsing fresh fruits and vegetables in chlorinated water and transporting the products in refrigerated cars are ways that industry can help reduce the risk. Restaurants and retailers also have food handling standards that must be maintained to ensure product safety. Consumers also have a responsibility to handle fruits and vegetables in a safe manner. Below are some pointers to keep in mind when handling fruits and vegetables.

Only 1 in 5 Missouri adults eat the recommended five or more servings of fruits and vegetables daily, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This is in spite of the growing number of research studies suggesting that nutrients in fruits and vegetables may help prevent chronic diseases. Cancer Prevention Month is a great time to focus on increasing the number of fruits and vegetables that you eat. Fruits and vegetables contain important vitamins, minerals and fiber. "Nutrients called phytochemicals , or phytonutrients phytos appear to fight against the formation of cancer cells.
Extractions: and Vegetables in CN Programs June 25, 2003 - Yesterday, Congressman Adam Putnam (R-FL) introduced the Healthy Nutrition for America Act. The bill would affect the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC), as well as the School Breakfast Program and other federal child nutrition programs. Rep. Dennis Cardoza, (D-CA) chief co-sponsor of the bill, joined Putnam in introducing the Act. The proposed legislation would encourage children to consume more fruits, vegetables and 100% fruit juices as part of a healthy diet. The bill requires fresh fruits and 100% juices be made available through the School Breakfast Program. The bill also proposes providing 5 cents in commodities for each reimbursable breakfast served, as suggested in the ASFSA Legislative Issue Paper. The bill includes the following provisions: School Breakfast Program Increase the number and range of fresh fruits and 100% juices to students in the School Breakfast program. Facilitate the availability of fruits and juices and establish a commodity purchase program for school breakfast at the rate of five cents per meal, consistent with the formula for the school lunch program. The addition of commodities purchases for the breakfast program will support the nutritional quality of the meal while keeping costs to school systems down. School Lunch Program
Market Situation On Cotton South Texas fruits and Vegetable Markets can be shipped either to wholesale outletsor shipped directly to retail grocery firms or food service firms across http://agfacts.tamu.edu/Bajatx/Market/FruitsVegs/FruitsVegs.html
Extractions: Background South Texas has a long history of fruit and vegetable production. The main horticultural crops are citrus, onions, cantaloupes, honeydew melons, watermelons, carrots, cabbage, and fresh greens. A large number of other fruit, vegetable, and speciality crops are grown in relatively small acreages. The bulk of this production is in the irrigated portions of the Lower Rio Grande Valley and the Winter Garden (southwest of San Antonio). Horticultural crops are somewhat unique because of their perishable nature and their role as food products. The value of fresh produce (and processed vegetable, to a lesser extent) is extremely sensitive to variations in quality and grade. There is therefore an extremely high degree of production risk because field or transportation conditions can affect the quality of fresh produce. Horticultural crops can vary considerably in price due to relatively small changes in supply or demand. Horticultural producers therefore face considerable price risk as well.
