Extractions: Although Sir Humphrey Gilbert was not involved directly in the Roanoke voyages, both he and members of his family participated in early colonization efforts, and Gilbert decisively influenced his half-brother Sir Walter Ralegh, the leading proponent of the Roanoke Island colonies. Born about 1539, Gilbert was the second son of Otho Gilbert and Katherine Champernowne. Compton Castle, the family seat, was then held by Otho's elder brother John; thus it was at Greenway on the River Dart, that John, Humphrey, Adrian and Elizabeth Gilbert were born. All four children were minors when their father died in 1547. Their mother then married Walter Ralegh the elder, and bore two more sons and one daughterWalter, Carew, and Margaret Ralegh. Educated at Eton and at Oxford, Humphrey Gilbert also spent time in the household of Princess Elizabeth, who later became Queen Elizabeth. In 1562-63, he served under the Earl of Warwick at Le Havre and was wounded during the siege. Early interested in exploration, in 1566 he prepared A Discourcs of a Discoveries for a new Passage to Cataia [China] in which he urged the queen to seek a Northwest Passage to China because the known routes were controlled by the Spanish and the Portuguese. Both Martin Frobisher and John Davys were inspired by this work. Gilbert invested in Frobisher's 1576 voyage and Davys named Gilbert Sound, near Greenland, in his honor.

Extractions: Martin Frobisher was an English navigator and explorer. He was one of the first English to search for the Northwest passage to India and Asia. Today, he is considered to be one of the greatest seamen of the age of Queen Elizabeth I. He was very courageous and resourceful; sometimes he was also so strict that captains of ships were sometimes unwilling to work with him. In 1535, Martin Frobisher was born in Altofts, Yorkshire. His father died when he was young. After that, his mother sent him to live with his uncle who was a merchant in London. He spent a lot of his childhood working as a trader for him. School was never very important to him; he spent most of his life barely literate. As a kid he was considered violent and undisciplined, but very ambitious. So, he started privateering as a teen and gave up trading. The trip went badly from the start. The smallest ship collided with another and they were delayed until repairs were made. Later, a storm came up and one of the ships disappeared. When they reached Greenland, one of the ships turned back. Another hardship was the cold, ice, and freezing winds. Still, Frobisher went on and discovered a bay on Baffin Island. He named it Frobisher Bay after himself. He continued onward, thinking that this was the entrance to the Northwest passage.

For more information on De Aviles, click here DE FUCA, JUAN Juan de Fuca (15-1601?) was a Greek navigator who sailed for Spain under a Spanish name; his original name was Apostolos Valerianos. De Fuca sailed up the western coast of North America from Mexico to Vancouver Island in 1592, looking for a passage from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean. He was perhaps the first European to see this area. He sailed through the Strait of Juan de Fuca (which was named for him in 1725) and believed it to be the beginning of a route to the Atlantic Ocean (it is not). This strait connects the Pacific Ocean to the Puget Sound and the Georgia Strait, between the Olympic Peninsula of Washington state, USA, and Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. After sailing back to Acapulco, Mexico, de Fuca was not rewarded by Spain for his journey, and his discovery of the strait was not entirely believed until Captain Vancouver retraced de Fuca's route 200 years later. After this journey, de Fuca returned to Greece.

The millennium is a time to retell, relate and reflect on the past. What better way to achieve this goal than to hold a reunion, An Early Explorer Reunion. We will invite the early explorers to an unforgettable event filled with tales and glory. We will have a chance to meet these wonderful men face to face and to discover the stories they have kept with them for so many years. The Task Early explorers plotted their courses carefully on navigational charts. Captains and others on board also kept logs or diaries during their journeys. Your team task is to investigate three early expeditions to the New World. You will explore web sites containing information and graphics about the life of an early explorer. You will be asked to find specific information dealing with the expeditions of three explorers. This information will help you put yourself in the shoes of the explorers. Through the eyes of your explorer you will be asked to keep a daily log of your findings. He was knighted by the queen of england. The reason he was knighted was so he could help defeat the spanish armada. Martin thought the first inuits they met were chinese. The country they found there was very cold.
