Ribeiro Physics Institute, University of Brazil UFRJ, CxP 68532, Rio de Janeiro, RJ 21945-970, Brazil; mbr@if.ufrj.br Abstract z [sim] 0.1, implying that at this range average densities behave in a fundamentally different manner as compared to the linearity of the Hubble law, well valid for z < 1. This conclusion brings into question the widespread assumption that relativistic corrections can always be neglected at low z . It is also shown how some key features of fractal cosmologies can be found in the Friedmann models. In view of those findings, it is suggested that the so-called contradiction between the cosmological principle, and the galaxy distribution forming an unlimited fractal structure, may not exist. Extractions: Introduction Ever since I saw my first picture of the Mandelbrot set (The background image to this page is that of the Mandelbrot Set) I've been fascinated by fractals. One of my prized possessions is a copy of Peitgen and Richter's 'The Beauty of Fractals', signed by Benoit B. Mandelbrot himself after I attended a lecture of his in London a few years ago. Naturally, also being interested in computers I felt the need to combine the two. In fact fractal images have really only been quite so popular and accessible *because* of the advent of computers. My first attempts to draw and zoom into the Mandelbrot set were some 15 years ago now. These few pages detail some of my work with fractals, and of course there are some pictures along the way. Firstly, in case you haven't come across the subject before, you may be wondering - "what are fractals?". The short answer - A fractal shape is a shape, rough or geometric, which when subdivided into parts is found to have it's own shape within itself, independently of scale. For example the branches of a tree, as you move away from the trunk of a tree, towards the extremities if each twig, you move through boughs and branches and twigs, and yet all are similar in shape and structure, differing only in size.

John Denk's Fractal Images. Over 100 years ago, the idea of fractals was introduced in mathematicaljournals and literature. However, like many revolutionary http://www.graphicdesignbasics.com/article1028.html

This is the divine breath that animates them." Denis Diderot The Fractal Imagery of John Denk 10 May 2001 I first learned about fractals while attending a mushroom conference in Telluride, CO. At first, I couldn't understand the relationship among mushrooms, math and visual imagery. But after a bit of study, the logical connection among this seemingly disparate triad became clear. A simple explanation of fractals is the processes or images that exhibit self-similarity. In other words, reduced versions of the fractal appear throughout the fractal. A fern is usually the best example of this process: When you look at a fern, you see one image. As you look at the fern's leaves, you see a miniature version of the fern on which the leaf is attached. If you took a microscope and looked further into this leaf, the image of the original, large fern would repeat itself, possibly into infinity. Infinite detail, however, is not a defining property of a fractal. It's just a common theme throughout the various fractal images.
