Thus, I am not going to be apologetic for beginning this review by stating boldly that Ron Eglash's African Fractals is bound to be regarded as one of the greatest books on African studies produced in this century. This brilliant, scientific work contributes significantly towards shattering long-held myths and misconceptions about Africans (both on the Continent and in the Diaspora), the most pervasive and pernicious of which is the notion of Africans as inactive agents in historya people devoid of writing systems, technological background and culture. The book is divided into three parts with 14 chapters. The first part introduces fractal geometry for people without any mathematics background, fractals in African settlement architecture, fractals in cross-cultural comparison, and intention and invention in design. The second part discusses geometric algorithms, scaling, numeric systems, recursion, infinity, and complexity. The third part focuses on theoretical frameworks in cultural studies of knowledge, the politics of African fractals, fractals in European history of mathematics, and futures for African fractals.

Abstract: In a fascinating article on models for particulate microstructure, Hermann and Ohser argue that the superposition of stochastically independent Boolean models may be thought of as producing sets whose boundaries have unusual properties of dimension. Hermann and Ohser employ such superposition models to analyse the particulate structure of rust. In the present paper we provide a theoretical foundation for their work, with respect to both the definition of dimension and its statistical estimation. We argue that the dimension of set boundaries is not well defined in either the Minkowski or capacity senses. It can, however, be properly defined using a mathematical formalization of the practical notion of analysing a spatial pattern at different resolution levels. Cutler Source: Bernoulli Abstract: It is natural in many contexts to employ conditioning arguments in order to deduce properties of a multivariate distribution P n from properties of a lower-order distribution P n-1 . In this paper we show that the pointwise (fractal) dimension of P n can be updated from the pointwise dimension of P n-1 via the one-step conditional distributions provided the latter satisfy certain Lipschitz-type properties. Specifically, we prove that pointwise dimension can be computed iteratively according to the conditional additivity rule ,...,x n ,x n ,...,x n-1 This approach is then used to analyse the behaviour of pointwise dimension for various stationary stochastic processes; the emphasis is on dynamical systems corrupted by noise. In particular, we show that for functionals of stochastic processes with discrete conditional distributions satisfying the necessary conditions (such as missing-data models of dynamical systems and randomly iterated function systems) pointwise dimension remains bounded over time just as in the strictly deterministic case. On the other hand, we prove that for stochastic dynamical systems with additive diffuse noise, pointwise dimension diverges to infinity over time. An example of a stationary dynamical system where the conditional additivity rule fails is also provided.

The fractal had the title 'Can-o-Worms',and seemed to me an example of fine synchronicity. My novel, The Sex Life of Worms br I was reading an article in Strange Attractor, and the author mentioned fractals in connection with H. P. Lovecraft. I have long thought fractals to be somehow Lovecraftian, and was pleased that someone else thought so, too. But there is another writer/artist with whom I am coming to associate fractals, and who has also been an influence on, yes, my novel, The Sex Life of Worms . That artist is Masamune Shirow . Since I've been a little peripatetic in recent years my hobby of collecting comics got put on hold until lately when I started buying the Ghost in the Shell 2 series, by Shirow. Some of the artwork, I found in my comic-fetishist way, to be quite exquisite and even breath-taking. br I'd like to talk a little, instead, about Shirow's work. First

I wanted images of worms, and so entered the word 'worms,' into the Google search engine. I was fascinated to find a fractal called 'Can-o-Worms,' since fractals have been such an influence on my novel The Sex Life of Worms . I posted a link to that fractal. The link went on the blink. In the meantime, in my next post, I used images of more fractals. At least one of the images I linked to jammed my link, sending a message instead of the image. The message said something like, "No direct links!" Later, a similar message appeared in place of the blinky 'Can-o-Worms.' I had spent a great deal of time in setting up these posts, researching the images and so on. I heaved a great weary sigh to find I had to edit these entries yet again. Why do these sites feel they have to block 'hotlinking,' as it appears to be called? Are they part of the internet, or aren't they? Let's look at the word 'internet.' It appears to mean 'a network created by interlinking.' And they are shunning the very principle on which this is built. Personally, I want people to link to my part of the internet. < br br Anyway, when I was looking for a replacement for 'Can-o-Worms,' I found a great fractal site called 'Maria's Fractal Explorer Gallery.' I liked these fractals even more than the ones at Fractal Domain, even though there wasn't a wormy theme anywhere in sight. I also noticed that, joy of joys, Maria stated her policy thus: "All fractals and spot files are free for non-commercial use. Please ask me if you wish to use any of my work for commercial use." I thought to myself, "I love this person!" Tell me your policy and I will respect it! Even though I did not wish to use any of her images commercially, I wrote for her permission anyway, because I appreciated this so much. The URL for her site is in my list of links. <
